Women’s cross country team was ranked second in the USTFCCCA Southeast Region rankings
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The University of Louisville women's cross country team was ranked second in the USTFCCCA Southeast Region rankings on Monday afternoon.Â
Rankings are determined subjectively by a single member coach in each of the 18 regions. They are tasked with weighing the returning teams' strength with current season results in determining predicted team finishes at the NCAA Regional Championships. Â
"It's exciting to see our women's squad continue to receive a high level of respect within the Southeast Region," said head coach Dale Cowper. "They had a breakout year last fall and we are confident that coach Walker and coach Wrieden have them moving in the right direction throughout the preseason. While the ladies can grow into an extraordinarily competitive team, we are also excited to see who can emerge to lead our men's squad. The preseason rankings show our program is continuing to move forward and we'll continue focusing on setting up another strong postseason run."
The Louisville women return six runners from last season's team that finished as runner-up at the NCAA Southeast Regional. The Cardinals had a breakout season, advancing to the first NCAA Championship appearance in program history. The Louisville men welcome six newcomers this season after graduating All-American Edwin Kibichiy and all-region performer Calvin Chemoiywo.Â
The Cardinals begin the 2017 season this weekend as they will run in a dual meet against Tennessee in Knoxville Saturday morning. The men will begin at 9:00 a.m. and the women will race at 9:45 a.m.Â
