Wynn Lifts Men's Tennis to 4-3 Victory Over NC State
April 07, 2017 | Men's Tennis
Cards extend win streak to seven matches
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Freshman Parker Wynn's dramatic 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 (3) victory over Nick Horton lifted the University of Louisville men's tennis team to a 4-3 win over host North Carolina State Friday afternoon.
Â
With the score tied at 3-3, the match came down to court two where Wynn and Horton, No. 74 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association singles rankings, were locked in a three-set battle after Wynn took the first set 6-3 and Horton answered with 7-5 decision in the second set. After playing to a 6-6 tie in the third, Wynn prevailed 7-3 in the tiebreaker to give the Cardinals their fifth ACC win.
Â
"When we play NC State in Raleigh, we know it will take a great effort to win," said UofL head coach Rex Ecarma. "We have had some classic matches in Raleigh like in 2009 and 2015 when Robert Hall and Chris Simich were the heroes respectively after we fell behind. I told this year's team both stories. Brandon was down 1-3 and Parker was one point away from being down 2-5 in the third. Then Brandon got into a 'no-miss' mode and Parker started going to the net more and they took us to the finish line. It takes an incredible effort because down 2-3 in matches, we had no room for error and needed to win both. I'm so proud of the growth this team is experiencing and we are all enjoying it every step of the way."
Â
The Cardinals (18-4, 5-2) started the match by taking the doubles point with wins on courts one and three. Wynn teamed with senior Sean Donohue to beat Alexis Galarneau and Michael Ogden 6-1 to give Louisville an early edge. The Wolfpack's Horton and Georgiy Malyshev evened the doubles tally with a 6-2 win against sophomore Christopher Morin-Kougoucheff and junior Ciro Lampasas at the two-spot. The first point of the match came down to court three where sophomore George Hedley and junior Nicolas Rouanet defeated Ivan Saveljic and Igor Saveljic 6-2.
Â
In singles, freshman Clement Filho added to the Cardinals' lead with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Sean Burnett at No. 6. NC State got on the scoreboard when Igor Saveljic beat Rouanet 6-2, 6-4 at the three-spot. The Wolfpack evened the score with No. 116 Alexis Galarneau's 7-6, 6-0 decision against Morin-Kougoucheff at No. 1 On court four, Malyshev edged Hedley 6-4, 7-5, 6-4 to give NC State a 3-2 lead.
Â
The Cardinals answered with sophomore Brandon Lancaster's 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory over Ivan Saveljic at No. 5 which tied the match at 3-3.
Â
With his match-clinching win at No. 2, Wynn improves his overall singles record to 34-9 and currently stands fifth on Louisville's list for single season victories. He also moves his dual match tally to a team-best 18-3.
