Men's Tennis Falls 4-0 to No. 3 Virginia in ACC Quarterfinals
April 28, 2017 | Men's Tennis
Cards move to 21-9 on the season
The University of Louisville men's tennis team fell 4-0 to third-ranked Virginia in the quarterfinals of the ACC Championship Friday afternoon. The Cardinals (21-9) will learn their NCAA fate when the selection show airs Tuesday at 5 p.m. on NCAA.com.
Â
"Virginia did a great job at the deuce points," said UofL head coach Rex Ecarma. Â "There were about 50 of them in the course of nine individual matches and they won around 35. That was the difference which came from winning national championships."
Â
The Cavaliers opened the match by taking the doubles point with wins at Nos. 2 and 3. The doubles team of Thai-Son Kwiatkowski and Alexander Ritschard defeated juniors Nicolas Rouanet and Ciro Lampasas 6-1 on court two and Collin Altamirano and J.C. Aragone followed with a 6-3 victory over sophomores Christopher Morin-Kougoucheff and George Hedley at the two-spot. On court one, Louisville's 31st-ranked pair of senior Sean Donohue and freshman Parker Wynn were leading 4-3 when their match was suspended.
Â
In singles action, Ritschard gave the Cavaliers a 2-0 lead when he beat Morin-Kougoucheff 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1. Virginia added another point on court five when No. 117 Aragone defeated sophomore Brandon Lancaster 6-3 6-4. The match was decided at the six-spot where No. 95 Henrik Wiersholm topped freshman Clement Filho 6-3, 6-3.
Â
On court two, Wynn defeated No. 15 Kwiatkowski 7-5 in his first set and was leading 4-3 in the second when the match was halted. At the four-spot, Hedley picked up a 6-3 first-set win over No. 46 Altamirano and was down 5-4 in the second set when the match ended. Junior Nicolas Rouanet lost his first set 6-4 to No. 109 Carl Soderlund and was leading 3-2 in the second when their match was suspended.
Â
"As far as our future, I wholeheartedly believe we will get an at-large bid to the NCAA," said Ecarma. "We have 21-9 record with four wins versus other projected at-large teams. All of our losses came against teams that will have good seeds in the NCAA tournament. We won seven matches in the best conference in the country and my calculations have our computer ranking at around No. 40 with the NCAA tennis tournament field at 64. Our team is playing well right now."
