Louisville joined by ACC foes Virginia, Notre Dame, Clemson and Miami in field of 12 total schools
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville rowing team will officially begin the 2017 season by hosting the sixth annual Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational on Saturday and Sunday at the Melton Lake Rowing Venue.
The Cardinals will be joined by a field of 11 other programs at this year's event, including Atlantic Coast Conference foes Virginia, Notre Dame, Clemson and Miami. Also competing this weekend will be Kansas, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Tennessee, Tulsa and West Virginia.
"We are going into this year's event with a lot of great training under our belt. We've had a successful scrimmage and a few good days on the Ohio this year and the team is very eager to race," said Louisville head coach Derek Copeland. "We have a great group of teams joining us this year and we are truly grateful to the Oak Ridge Rowing Association for making this possible once again."
The two-day event will feature morning and afternoon racing on Saturday (March 11) as well as morning racing on Sunday. Racing on the 2,000-meter course at the Melton Lake Rowing Venue is slated to begin at 9:14 a.m., ET each day, while Saturday's afternoon session is slated to begin at 3:10 p.m. Real-time results for the event will be provided through the Louisville rowing twitter account (@UofLRowing), while final results at the end of each day will be published on herenow.com and GoCards.com.
"The Cardinal Invitational is a really fun event for us and our fans. We love being able to call Melton Lake our 'home course' for the weekend and the competition is always great," said Louisville volunteer assistant coach and regatta director Jami Montesano. "The Cardinal Invite is the first race of the season for many of the teams, so we're looking forward to seeing the hard work put in over the winter. We can't wait to see how it plays out."
The Cardinals, who completed their fall season last November at the Rivanna Romp in Charlottesville, Virginia, will have varsity eight, varsity four, second varsity eight, third varsity eight, second varsity four and third varsity four crews competing in Oak Ridge. This week's event kicks off another busy spring racing season for Louisville, which will also compete at the ACC/Big Ten Double Duel on April 1, the Clemson Invitational on April 22-23 and at Michigan on April 29-30 before returning to Clemson, South Carolina for the ACC Championship on May 14.
"I'm really excited for my last, first race of the spring season with my teammates," said senior captain Gabi Biedenharn. "We've been working so hard and I can't wait to see how we do at our home opener."
