Women's Tennis Beats Liberty
February 05, 2017 | Women's Tennis
Cards roll 6-1 to move to 6-0 on the year.
LOUISVILLE, KY. – The University of Louisville women's tennis team captured a hard-fought doubles point before adding five singles win to defeat Liberty 6-1 on Saturday afternoon at Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
"I am excited for them. I hyped the team up and it was due hype because I believe Liberty is going to win their conference and they just came off a 4-3 win over East Tennessee team," said Mark Beckham, UofL head coach. "Liberty came in with confidence. It may look like we beat them comfortably but it shows that we have made a lot of progress in confidence. We are not the same team we were last year. We are improving. The biggest thing is that it may look like we beat them handily but it was because we played well. We made them look not a good as they truly are. That is a positive thing."
The Cardinals captured the doubles point, with Louisville's No. 1 team of Abbie Pahz and Mariana Humberg topping Rebekah Anderson and Aleksandra Panchenko, 6-3. The No. 3 team of Jessie Paul and Ariana Rodriguez sealed the doubles point over Mariely Hassey and Emily Groeneveld, 6-4. The No. 2 team of Sena Suswam and Olivia Boesing fell to Anna Dollar and Evangeline Crist, 6-4
"We lost to No. 2 in doubles and No. 1 was in pretty good shape but it was a dogfight. We were down a break at No. 3 so for them to come back and win that once again shows good mental toughness. If you don't win that doubles point, it frees people up to play better singles. It came down to a deuce game and we got it and won the point. We rolled that momentum into singles."
Louisville continued to strike in the singles competition with Jessie Paul defeating Mariely Hasley, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 6. At. No. 2, Mariana Humberg defeated Anna Dollar, 6-1, 6-3, while Aleksandra Mally defeated Rebekah Anderson, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 1. No. 3 Sena Suswam took down Aleksandra Panchenko, 6-4, 6-4, before Tiffany Huber defeated Emily Groeneveld, 6-4, 6-3,10-7 at No. 5. After winning the first set, Olivia Boesing fell to Evangeline Crist in three sets, 7-6, 6-2,10-8 at No. 4.
The Cards play next when they take on Georgia State Feb. 10 at noon at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
