Louisville vs. Memphis Postgame Quotes
December 16, 2017 | Men's Basketball
Louisville 81 Memphis 72 | Gotham Classic
LOUISVILLE HEAD COACH DAVID PADGETTÂ
(Opening Statement) "We responded in the second half, came out with more of a defensive mindset. You've got to give [Memphis] credit. This is a tough, physical team and they did a good job outrebounding us, especially in the first half, to get a lot of their misses and put-backs and second-chance points was really one of the major differences in the first half. I thought our guys did a great job coming out and staying poised. Came out of the gate in the second half, took the lead and did a good job of maintaining it even when they would go on a couple of runs. Really proud of our team, another great win and we're going to enjoy it here and get ready for the next one."
On his teams ups and downs so far this season:
"You've got to give the other team credit a lot of times. They have a very experienced point guard, in [Jeremiah] Martin, who played very well today. We knew he was going to be a big time player coming into the game. One of our goals was to make sure he didn't have a very good game and we didn't do a very good job of that, but you've  got to give the other team a lot of credit. The thing I was pleased with was, and I kept telling them in the timeouts, every time they went on a run, we needed to respond and go on a run of our own and we seemed to do that... That's a team with a lot of new guys that before too long is really going to start to click, so I'm actually glad that we played them when we did. "
On the program's coaching situation and its effect on recruiting:
"I don't think you're going to get a kid in the country to commit per se to Louisville until they know who the head coach is going to be moving forward, but like I said before, that's not my concern, that's not our players' concern, that's not our staff's concern. We really are just trying to focus on winning right now."
LOUISVILLE PLAYERS RAY SPALDING AND QUENTIN SNIDER Â
Junior forward Ray Spalding on playing in The Garden:
"Just in general it's a great experience. Coach [David Padgett], all the rest of the coaches, Trent Johnson, let us know a lot of great players played in this building and we should just have fun here, embrace that"
Senior guard Quentin Snider on the team's shooting (28-of-61, 14-of-26 from three-point range):
"Especially as an individual, that's what I was working on, shooting and stuff, but we knew just one game everyone was going to at least hit a three or something and we were going to catch hot."
On the team's defense:
"I just felt like the zone was kind of messed up. We didn't really communicate down on the floor. Basically the main thing is we need to contain our man off the dribble, so that's one thing that the guards need to work on."
Â
MEMPHIS HEAD COACH TUBBY SMITH
(Opening Statement) "First I want to compliment Louisville they did a great job making shots, made a bunch of three's a challenge for us but they have a good inside and outside. I am proud of how our guys competed today. For some of them it was the first time in New York and playing at Madison Square Garden. They do a good job with the Gotham Classic and we are happy to be participants. We improved in some areas and others we have to continue working on."
Â
On Jeremiah Martin:
"Jeremiah is the heart and soul and so is Jimario (Rivers). When he is on the game and playing with intensity we are competitive. Sometimes I think he tries to do a lot and we asked for a lot. He played 38 minutes. We have to find someone to help him. Malik Rhodes is the backup but he had a tough time. We need to work on developing someone that can handle the tough stage. Always impressed with Jeremiah, he made good decisions and made his free throws.
