Black squad extends its lead
Sophomore pitcher Sydney Warinner recaps day two of the 2017 OKC Challenge.
Â
(Not so) bright and early this morning, the Red and Black Squads commenced day two of the 2017 OKC Challenge. The day's events consisted of a double-header followed by a bonus round, all held at Marshal Center.Â
Â
For the first event, each team claimed a line of eight bikes set to gear-ten, and the first team to collectively complete 100 miles of work would win the challenge. On the cue of Coach Molly's whistle, each participant immediately engaged in a sprint, many clearing out their bikes' measure of revolutions per minute. This task not only challenged each biker's leg strength, but also her mental toughness and physical endurance, as each bike must average 12-13 miles. As the time cycled by, fatigue set in, but that did not hinder a single biker's will to fight for the win. In the end, the Black Squad completed 100 miles first, but both teams deserve credit for their incredible efforts. Â
Â
After a five-minute break, Coach Molly called captains, Mike and Funk, over to announce test two: the legendary Tower of Hanoi. This challenge involves a pyramid of five plates, stacked in order from lightest to heaviest (top to bottom). Taking place on the turf of Marshal, which contains three painted lines, the task requires that, by only placing plates on those three lines and only stacking lighter plates on top of heavier ones, each team complete the challenge with all five plates stacked on the third line in the same exact order in which they started. Coach Molly instructed that only injured players touch the plates, so junior, Darrianne Hale, of the Red Squad and junior, Sidney Melton, of the Black Squad fulfilled this role. Meanwhile, the rest of the teams had to hold a wall sit with a 10 kg plate resting on their legs until the task was complete. Â
Â
According to her fellow injured Sydney's instructions, Sidney Melton furiously zipped from side to side as she moved the plates, and, taking care to ensure that all plates were perfectly stacked, completed this challenge with astonishing speed. The Black Team had won yet another event, but the bonus round still remained.
Â
The day's final event was tug-of-war. On the field hockey field, Coach Molly had set up a rope beside a series of cones. To win one round, a team had to pull their opponent past the furthest cone. The overall winner would have to win the best out of five matches. The Black Squad started off strong, employing a strategy of shouting, "One, two, pull," and successfully won the first match. This loss lit a fire in the Red Team, who overcame the Black Squad to win match two. The Black Squad then won the next two matches, rendering them victorious over the bonus round.
Â
Adding in the Black Squad's reward of 100 points from the bike challenge, 100 points from the Tower of Hanoi, and 50 points from tug-of-war, the score has advanced to 500-50. Although the Black Squad has achieved a clean sweep of OKC events thus far, overall victory remains in reach for the Red Squad. Further tests of strength, speed, and strategy await both teams on Monday morning, when the OKC Challenge will resume. May the best team win.

During the brief hiatus this weekend, the Louisville Softball team will hold its annual Thanksgiving meal. At the end of the day, we are all one unit, one team, and one family. Â
