Volleyball Falls to Wake Forest
September 30, 2016 | Women's Volleyball
LOUISVILLE, Ky.- Louisville senior Janelle Jenkins had 16 kills and an ace, but it was not enough as the Cards fell 25-23, 24-26, 23-25, 19-25 to the Wake Forest Demon Deacons Friday night at the KFC Yum! Center.
Â
"It is a tough loss and it will be tough to bounce back from. We have to be able to execute under pressure," said Anne Kordes, UofL head coach.  "I thought we played our best match of the season against FSU, when we played like we had nothing to lose. We worry about each mistake and let it affect the next play."
Â
Louisville's Tess Clark hit .417 with seven kills while teammate Melanie McHenry finished with 13 kills for the Cards (5-8, 0-3). Wake Forest (6-8, 2-1) saw Kylie Long notch 22 kills and hit .283 on the night while her counterpart, Caroline Rassenfoss, finished with 17 kills.
Â
The Cards took the first set against Wake Forest, 25-23. Despite trailing 15-13 in kills, the Cards had fewer errors while hitting .278 and benefitted from three Deacon service errors and Jenkins led the team with four kills.
Â
In the second set, there were 17 ties and six lead changes in a back-in-forth duel. Neither team was able to put together a run until Wake Forest scored four straight out of their own timeout to give them the 22-19 advantage. The Cards could not capitalize on three kills by Jenkins in the last six points of the set, and gave Wake Forest a 26-24 second set win to tie the match at one set apiece.
Â
The Cards fell behind 6-2 early in the third set after a five point run by Wake Forest and they never fully recovered. Hitting just .129, the Cards were never able to gain momentum which led to Wake Forest taking a 2-1 lead in the match after winning the set, 25-23.
Â
The Cards fell, 25-19, in the fourth and final set. The Cards opened up a quick 8-4 lead only to have it erased and ultimately spoiled by an 11-2 Wake Forest run to finish the set. Â The Cards tied it up twice, but had the lead only once early in the set. The Cards had just 10 kills to Wake Forest's 18, with eight of the Demon Deacon's kills coming in their final 11 points.
Â
The Cards return to the KYC Yum! Center on Sunday at 1:00 PM to take on the Duke Blue Devils in an ACC matchup.
