LOUISVILLE, Ky. – There is an excitement around the first day of a football team practicing in full pads, and that was evident as the University of Louisville football team donned pads for the first time on Sunday afternoon.
After four practices in helmets and shoulder pads, the Cardinals practiced in full gear on for the first time on Sunday afternoon.
Taking the field at 3:50 p.m., head coach Bobby Petrino's squad worked for over two hours in the sweltering heat. After starting with individual drills, the Cardinals focused on running the football. The offensive line worked against the defensive line in three groups working on their blocking assignments, and the running backs finding the holes made by the offensive linemen.
The team periods saw both quarterbacks, Lamar Jackson and Kyle Bolin, look sharp throwing the football.
Jackson, who enters the season as the starter, threw two excellent passes down the field – hitting Ja'Quay Savage on the sideline with a long pass and finding Reggie
Bonnafon with a perfect throw over his shoulder. He moved the team efficiently working the offense and finding the open receiver quickly.
Bolin, who has also seen a lot of snaps as the starter, hit Keith Towbridge on consecutive passes for big gains. Bolin threw an excellent pass that Towbridge leaped for to pick up a first down.
Cornerback Trumaine Washington continues to have a good camp covering the wide receivers and showing the ability to break on the football.
Linebacker Gary McCrae, who was declared eligible on Friday, made his first appearance at practice on Sunday, working in just shorts per NCAA rules.
The Cardinals will hit the field again on Monday afternoon at 3:50 p.m.for sixth practice of fall camp.
