Lamar Jackson not satisfied with success in fall camp.
By: Rocco Gasparro
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – What a difference a year makes for the University of Louisville football team.
Heading into last season, there were plenty of questions surrounding the quarterback position with a lot inexperience at one of the most crucial spots on a football team.
With three underclassmen and a junior in the mix, there was a lot of uncertainty on who would emerge to take the snaps.
After a full spring and 12 fall practices, things are quite different as the season opener versus Charlotte on Sept. 1 is just 17 days away, with sophomore Lamar Jackson entrenched under center, and after Saturday's performance – he will be difficult to unseat.
Jackson was accurate, going 21-of-25 with five touchdown passes in the first major scrimmage of camp, but the sophomore quarterback didn't heap much praise on his performance.
"I am trying to be perfect, but those incompletions and those sacks made me mad," Jackson said. "They didn't show my ability to not get sacked. I'm still trying to get better every day."
First-year quarterbacks coach Nick Petrino said Jackson is still a work in progress, but likes his development just two weeks into camp.
"We are really trying to get Lamar solid on his progressions," Nick Petrino said after Monday's practice. "We are trying to get him to understand the offense. He did a good job of going through his progressions and hitting his check downs."
The Boynton Beach, Fla., native looks more comfortable in the pocket, and continues to work hard finding his receivers, but the second-year signal caller issued all the compliments to his teammates for Saturday's outstanding performance.
"My teammates made me successful on Saturday," Jackson said. "We were clicking together … we had great protection and everyone did a good job running their routes. We are ready for the season to start."
Head coach Bobby Petrino also was pleased with what he saw during Saturday's 105-play scrimmage on Saturday, especially from his offense.
"I was impressed with a lot of things I saw," Petrino said following Saturday's scrimmage. "I think we are going to be able to run the ball. Lamar did a really good job of distributing the ball. ... We were able to get all the receivers involved."
Jackson said he likes where the offense is right now after the first week and a half of camp and sees the team continuing to work hard and getting in their playbooks to grasp Petrino's complex offense.
"We are out here grinding, trying to get better every day," he said. "All of us were clicking together (in the scrimmage). Our timing, we are just getting better all the time."
But Jackson said there's still room for improvement. He said the offense is "80 percent" right now.
"Coach (Petrino) is just satisfied right now," Jackson said. "We are trying to make him walk away with a smile on his face."
Louisville will hold its final open practice of fall camp on Tuesday at 9 a.m.
