Devonte Fields, Keith Kelsey, and Lamar Jackson earned preseason accolades.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Three University of Louisville football players were named to preseason national award watch lists on Tuesday.
Rising seniors Keith Kelsey and Devonte Fields were named to the Chuck Bednarik Award Watch List, while rising sophomore Lamar Jackson was tabbed to the Maxwell Award Watch List.
Kelsey, a linebacker from Gainesville, Fla., led the Cardinals in tackles with 107 – the first player since Preston Brown in 2012 to record over 100 tackles in a season. Kelsey, a first team all-ACC selection, recorded a career-best 15 tackles versus Houston, registered 12.0 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks in guiding the Cardinals' defense to another top-20 finish.
A native of Fort Worth, Texas, Fields, who transferred from Trinity Valley Junior College, led the nation in tackles for loss per game at 1.73 and paced the Cardinals with 11.0 sacks – the highest total since Marcus Smith recorded 14.5 in 2013.
Jackson, who made just seven starts, is widely considered one of the more electrifying players at the quarterback position after rushing for a school-record 960 yards and 11 scores, while passing for 1,840 yards and 12 touchdowns. He earned Music City Bowl Most Valuable Player honors after captivating a national television audience with a game-record 226 yards rushing and passing for 250 yards. He is only the third quarterback in postseason history to rush and pass for over 200 yards in a game.
The Bednarik Award has been presented to the College Defensive Player of the Year since 1995, while the Maxwell Award has been given to America's College Player of the Year since 1937. Semifinalists for the Maxwell and Bednarik Awards will be announced on Nov. 3, 2014, while finalists for each award will be unveiled Nov. 24, 2014.
