No. 5/8 Women’s Basketball Returns to Action, Faces Belmont on Sunday
November 12, 2016 | Women's Basketball
The Cardinals boast a 2-0 all-time mark against the Bruins, last defeating them in 2014.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The fifth-ranked Louisville women's basketball team couldn't have asked for a better start to a highly anticipated season.
The Cardinals have the opportunity to build on that momentum – albeit a two-day turnaround – on Sunday, when they play host to Belmont at the KFC Yum! Center in their home opener at 2 p.m. The contest will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra and is available on WKRD 790 AM, with Nick Curran (play-by-play) and Adrienne Johnson (analyst) calling the action.
While Myisha Hines-Allen, the reigning and preseason Atlantic Coast Conference player of the year, earned plenty of early recognition, Asia Durr stole the show on Friday. The sophomore scored a career-high 24 points, connecting on seven 3s, in leading Louisville to a 100-57 win over UT Martin.
Hines-Allen, who recorded her 13th career double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, enters Sunday's contest five points shy of reaching 1,000 for her career.
The Cardinals, though, received a well-rounded performance. Collectively, Louisville shot 56.1 percent from the field, dished out 23 assists on 37 field goals, forced 32 turnovers for 37 points, and received 49 points from its bench.
Belmont (1-0) also logged a sizeable, season-opening victory on Friday, defeating Fort Wayne 85-59. The Bruins hit 10 3s, earned a 45-32 advantage on the glass, and turned the ball over just 10 times.
All five Bruins starters scored in double figures, paced by Sally McCabe's 15. She also had three blocks in the victory. Frankie Joubran had a game-high seven rebounds.
The program, which earned votes in the Associated Press' preseason poll for the first time in school history, returns all five starters from last year's team that went 24-9 and reached the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Kylee Smith (13.8 points, 5.8 rebounds), McCabe (12.2 points, 7.3 rebounds), and Darby Maggard (12.5 points, 3.8 rebounds) each earned preseason all-OVC honors and lead a Belmont team that was picked to finish first in the league.
The Bruins are under the direction of fourth-year coach Cameron Newbauer, who has directed the program to a 53-44 mark. Prior to taking over Belmont, Newbauer was an assistant coach at Louisville in 2012-13 and helped the program reach the national championship game.
