Hartlage’s Stellar Play Leading Women’s Golf at Cougar Classic
October 03, 2016 | Women's Golf
Lauren Hartlage improved her season low with a 4-under-par 68 on Monday.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Lauren Hartlage is playing against some of the toughest competition she has faced in her young career. That seemingly doesn't matter to the freshman.
The Elizabethtown, Ky., native, Hartlage shot a season-best 4-under-par 68 on Monday at the Cougar Classic. The Cardinals, behind Hartlage's strong play, moved up one spot to ninth at Yeamans Hall Club in Hanahan, S.C.
Hartlage, a day after shooting a 3-under-par 69, is tied for third after a two-day score of 7-under-par 137. Despite a slow start, bogeying her first two holes, she totaled eight birdies over the course of the day and earned a 3-under-par on the back nine. Twice, the 5-foot-5 Hartlage birdied par-5 holes – first on No. 9, a 523-yard hole, and then on No. 18, a 460-yard hole.
Statistically, Hartlage's 13 birdies are second most in the 108-player field. Also, her second-round score is the lowest single-round total by a freshman since Jacqueline Twitty earned the same score last year in the second round of the Cardinal Cup.
Collectively, Louisville recorded an even-par 288 on the second day and boast a 1-over-par 577. While Furman and North Carolina, respectively, lead the pack at 18- and 17-under-par, the rest of the field is much closer. The Cardinals, who tee off at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, are 10 strokes back from third entering the final round.
Sophomore Oliva Cason jumped 20 spots on the leaderboard following Monday's performance. She clubbed a 1-under-par 71, moving into a tie for 31st. She totaled three birdies, including on Nos. 9 and 18.
Junior Molly Skapik slipped to a tie for 44th, with a 2-over-par 146, and Twitty is tied for 65th behind a 5-over-par 149.
The Cardinals will be paired with Arkansas, Maryland, and NC State on Tuesday.
