Cards snap five-game win streak in regular season finale
The seventh-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team fell 4-1 to No. 11 Michigan in the Cardinals' regular season finale Saturday afternoon.
"I'm disappointed with today's result," said UofL head coach Justine Sowry. "It was a reminder that the details matter. We were turning the ball over in critical zones, very sloppy defensively and didn't take the opportunities when we had them. Michigan, on the flip side, was ready and capitalized on the opportunities that they had."
The loss ends Louisville's five-game win streak and marks the Cards' first loss to a non-conference opponent this season. UofL (15-4) will return to action on Thursday when it faces North Carolina in the quarterfinals of the ACC Championship.
Â
The teams battled through 24 scoreless minutes in the first half before Michigan (11-6) broke through with a goal from Allie Sardo. The Wolverines took the 1-0 lead into the break despite Louisville holding a 6-2 edge in shots and a 5-0 advantage in corners.
Â
Michigan tacked on two more goals in the first 15 minutes of the second half. Emma Way notched her first goal of the game with an assist from Esther de Leijer. Five minutes later, Carly Bennett tapped in a feed from Fay Keijer to give the Wolverines a 3-0 lead.
Â
The Cardinals got on the scoreboard with under six minutes remaining in the game when senior Lotta Kahlert sent a reverse chip shot past Michigan's Sam Swenson to make the score 3-1.
Â
Three minutes later, Way's second goal of the game brought the final score to 4-1.
Â
In the game, Louisville outshot Michigan 10-8 and held a 7-2 edge in corners. Sophomore Ayeisha McFerran (14-4)collected three saves while Swenson had six for the Wolverines.
