Cards lose 25-22, 25-15, 25-17
Stephanie Williams had 13 kills and 11 digs to lead Pitt to a 25-22, 25-15, 25-17 win over the University of Louisville in ACC volleyball action Sunday afternoon in Pittsburgh. Â
Â
The Cards (7-13, 2-8 ACC ) hit .094 with 9.5 blocks and three aces but had 13 service errors. Pitt hit .274 with four aces and 10.5 blocks. Jasmine Bennett led the Cardinals with seven kills and two blocks. Morgan Miller added seven kills and an ace. Pitt got seven kills from Jenna Potts, who also had six blocks. The Panthers improve to 15-7 and 6-4 in the league.
Â
"We continue to struggle with errors, mainly attack errors some from bad swings, some from bad connections and some from good blocking by Pitt in this case," said Anne Kordes, UofL head coach. "This team is too focused on what didn't go right and should be more focused on the positives and what we can take away from this experience and use it as a learning experience and come back strong next match."
Â
The Cardinals used a 3-0 run powered by Gabbie Wiley's serve to take a 13-12 lead early but Pitt pushed back with blocking to take 20-15 lead. UofL cut the lead to two on three straight blocks at 22-20 but a kill by Mariah Bell, a Cardinal service error and a blocking error on Maggie DeJong gave the Panthers the 25-22 win.
Â
In the second set, Pitt upped its offensive hitting to .310 and used it to take it to a 17-9 lead early. The Cardinals were unable to cobble a long run together but did get within five at 19-15 before the Panthers ran the table for the 25-15 win. Jasmine Bennett led the Cards with two kills and a block.
Â
In the third set, Pitt ran out to a 7-2 lead and then later used an 8-2 run to go up 18-8 on the Cardinals. The Cards made two surges late, a three point run powered by a kill and ace by Morgan Miller and a block by Jasmine Bennett a bit closer but trailing 19-12. Molly Sauer served for four straight points to get to 21-16 but Pitt four of the last five points for the 25-17 win.
Â
The Cardinals return home for a pair of ACC matches next week, facing Florida State on Oct. 28 at 6 p.m. and Miami on Oct. 30 at 2 p.m. both at the KFC Yum! Center. Â
