October 19, 2016 | Men's Basketball
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- University of Louisville sophomore forward Deng Adel is among the 20-player watch list for the 2017 Julius Erving Small Forward of the Year Award, presented by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Named after 11-time NBA All-Star Julius Erving, the annual honor in its third year recognizes the top small forwards in Division I men's college basketball.
Adel was a starter the first two games of his freshman season before being sidelined with an injury for a month. He started the last five games of the season, averaging 7.2 points and 3.2 rebounds per game. Overall, Adel averaged 4.0 points per game and 2.1 rebounds per game. He had a career best game against Boston College, scoring 13 points and pulling down seven rebounds.
Adel is one of six ACC representatives on the watch list for the award, joining Florida State's Dwayne Bacon, Notre Dame's VJ Beachem, Clemson's Jaron Blossomgame, North Carolina's Justin Jackson and Duke's Jason Tatum.
A national committee comprised of top college basketball personnel determined the watch list of 20 candidates. By mid-February, the watch list will be narrowed to 10. In March, five finalists will be presented to Mr. Erving and the Hall of Fame's selection committee. The winner of the 2017 Julius Erving Award will be presented at the ESPN College Basketball Awards Show in Los Angeles, Calif. on Friday, April 7, 2017. Broadcast information will be released at a later date.
Previous winners of the Julius Erving Small Forward of the Year Award include Denzel Valentine, Michigan State (2016) and Stanley Johnson, Arizona (2015). For more information on the 2017 Julius Erving Award, visit www.HoophallAwards.com.
