January 31, 2016 | Women's Golf
Laura Restrepo won the individual title with a 2-over-par 146.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Laura Restrepo shot a 2-over-par 146 to win the Battle of the Bluegrass State crown, and the University of Louisville women's golf team captured the team title for the second year in a row on Sunday.
The senior, Restrepo shot a field-best even-par 72 in the first, and the Cardinals placed three in the top-four positions at the Chariot Run Golf Course in Indiana for their second team championship of the year in the dual match against Kentucky. Shannon Gramley and Katie Mitchell tied for third with an 8-over-par 152.
"Laura played phenomenal in the extremely windy conditions," head coach Courtney Trimble said, "and I am happy for her to begin her final semester with a great performance."
After trailing through the first round by five holes, the Cardinals regrouped and improved by 13 strokes in the second round. Gramley fueled the comeback with a 1-over-par 73, the best performance in the field over the final 18 holes. Restrepo added with a 2-over-par 74.
"We are very glad to keep the trophy in Louisville," Trimble said. "It is always a very fun, competitive battle with UK, and it's been great the last two years to have this match. It's a great lead off to our season and a great way to get competitive early in the spring. I am proud of the team effort to come back from a rough first 18 holes and complete the comeback victory."
Freshman Ellen Kehoe was the Cardinals' No. 4 scorer, taking ninth with a 13-over-par 157.
Louisville also had five individuals in the competition, and freshman Jacqueline Twitty had the best finish of the group with an 8-over-par 152 to tie for third. Classmate Olivia Cason earned a seventh-place showing, carding a 3-over-par 75 in the second to finish the day at 10-over-par 154.
The Cardinals continue the spring portion of their schedule, which features a host of desirable trips, from Feb. 14-16 at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico. The three-day event is set to be held at the River Course at Rio Mar Country Club that was designed by Greg Norman.
