Cardinals travel to Evansville for the season opener
LOUISVILLE, KY. - The University of Louisville men's and women's cross country teams are set to open the 2015 season on Saturday, Sept. 5 when they travel to compete in the Evansville Early Bird Invite in Evansville, Ind.
With excessive heat on tap for the Evansville area this weekend, the Early Bird Invite Cross Country Meet at the Angel Mounds Course will now begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday morning. Leading off the day will be an 8K men's race before the women will run a 5K event at approximately 10:45. Joining the Cardinals in the race will be Indiana State, Marshall, Oakland City and host Evansville.
Both Louisville squads experienced solid campaigns last year in their first season in an extremely tough conference. The men's team posted an eighth-place finish at the ACC Championships, with the women finishing 12th.
The 2015 men's squad, which is sixth in the 2015 ACC preseason coaches' poll, features six returnees, including senior Ernest Kibet, who posted his career-best 8K time at the ACC Championships, and junior Edwin Kibichiy. Both Kibichiy and Kibet represented the Cardinals at the NCAA Championships and finished 23rd and 32nd, respectively, to garner All-American honors.
The women's squad, ranked 11th in the ACC preseason coaches' poll, returns nine runners, including junior Benadate Cheruiyot, who finished the season with two top 10 finishes, competed at the NCAA Southeast Regional and finished with a season-best time of 21:17.0. Cheruiyot also earned All-ACC academic honors. Kelsey Cramsey will return for the Cards after sitting out last season with an injury, giving the women some depth and experience.
