Offense Contiues To Build Toward Opener Versus Auburn
August 18, 2015 | Football
LOUISVILLE, Ky. Fall practices continued on Tuesday as the University of Louisville football team inched one day closer to the Sept. 5 opener versus Auburn in Atlanta, Ga.
The Cardinals held a single practice on Tuesday morning in full pads, before the squad's last set of double-session practices beginning at 9 a.m. on Wednesday.
With just 18 days before the official start of the season, the Cardinals are working to develop consistency on the offensive side of the football, with the loss of several key components from last year.
Offensive coordinator Garrick McGee continues to search for a starter at the quarterback position after Saturday's 175-play scrimmage. When pressed for when an announcement on a starter, McGee joked that he had until Sept. 5 to make a decision.
"I'm not sure how long it's going to go," McGee said. "All the quarterbacks were about the same in the scrimmage. I know they are in control of what's going on, and we're really fortunate that we've got some really good guys."
Besides all the talk about the quarterbacks, the offensive line has also been a focal point, with the loss of three starters off the 2014 squad. The Cardinals have looked to a pair of freshmen in Geron Christian and Kenny Thomas emerging as possible starters.
"I think when we first got started we had to figure out their athleticism," McGee said. "We had to figure out what do they do and how they play. We had to figure out if Thomas was a tackle or guard, or what position do they play. We are at a point where we are settling in at what positions they will play."
The Cardinals lost a lot of firepower on offense, and continue to develop weapons that will make the offense more explosive. One of those playmakers will be sophomore Charles Standberry, who caught seven passes for 57 yards and a pair of touchdowns in 2014, but McGee think he will be a bigger part of the offense this year.
"He's a tremendous weapon for us," McGee said. "He's a big body in the passing game that's very athletic. We can move him around and create some things for him in the passing game."
Standberry wants to be a big part of the offense, but his attitude just focuses on winning.
"I will do whatever is best to help the team win," Standberry said. "Whatever role they want me to fill, I will do. I think my versatility can be an asset to this offense, which will help create some match-up problems."
