The University of Louisville men's basketball team begins play in its 41st NCAA Tournament in school history against UC-Irvine on Friday afternoon at approximately 4:10 p.m. in Key Arena.
The Cardinals enter the tournament as the No. 4 seed with an overall record of 24-8. Louisville is fifth nationally in NCAA Tournament appearances and sixth in tournament victories (72-41 record in the NCAA Tournament). The Cardinals are tied for fourth in NCAA Sweet 16 appearances (20), sixth in advancing to Elite Eights (13) and seventh with 10 Final Fours. Louisville won the 1980, 1986 and 2013 NCAA Championships.
The Cardinals have three players averaging double figures. Sophomore guard Terry Rozier leads the team in scoring with 17.1 points per game. Junior Montrezl Harrell ranks second on the team in scoring with 15.7 points while senior Wayne Blackshear is third with 10.9. Harrell lead the team in rebounding with 9.5 rebounds per game. Rozier ranks second on the team in rebounding with 5.3 per game.
UC Irvine, the No. 13 seed, is in its first NCAA tournament in program history. UC Irvine beat Hawai'i 67-58 in the championship game of the Big West Conference Tournament at the Honda Center to punch its ticket to the NCAA Tournament. UCI's sophomore guard Luke Nelson scored 17 points and senior forward Will Davis II had 10 points and 10 rebounds to lead UC Irvine.
The March 20 game will air on TBS, with Spero Dedes (play-by-play), Mike Gminski, (analyst), and Jaime Maggio (reporter) calling the action. Paul Rogers (play-by-play) and Bob Valvano (analyst) will announce the game on WHAS 840 AM. The contest also is available on SIRIUS channel 93 and XM channel 203.
