February 16, 2015 | Football
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - After losing a pair of safeties to the NFL Draft this year, the University of Louisville had big holes to fill at the safety position, and filled that gap with the signing of Dee Smith of Florence High and Khane Pass of Carver High.
Both players will report to the Cardinals this summer.
Rated as a 4-star recruit, Smith played linebacker and safety at Florence (Ala.) High. Tabbed as the No. 16 player in the state of Alabama by Rivals.com, Smith was ranked as the No. 11 safety in the country by Scout.com, and the No. 39 safety by Rivals.com. A native of Florence, Ala., Smith made the switch to safety this year and intercepted three passes and totaled 50 tackles.
Pass, who graduated from Carver High, is an all-around athlete who can lock down on defense. Pass is considered a big hitter who is also capable of helping in coverage. Rated the No. 29 safety nationally by both 247Sports and Rivals.com and ranked the No. 48 prospect in Georgia, Pass recorded 55 tackles, nine pass breakups and two interceptions as a junior. This past season, Pass was credited with 36 tackles, with interceptions and nine pass breakups. A two-time first-team All-Bi-City selection in 2013 and 2014, Pass was also a standout guard on the basketball team.
