Cards will leave Christmas Day for the Music City Bowl
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -Â As the holiday season rapidly approaches, families are getting together to celebrate Christmas and the upcoming new year. However, the University of Louisville football team is busy focusing on Texas A&M and its appearance in the 18th Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl on Dec. 30 in Nashville, Tenn.
The Cardinal have been in full-preparation mode since last week in anticipation of another post-season appearance against an SEC opponent. It will be the 20th bowl appearance and the sixth-consecutive post-season game for the Cardinals.
UofL head coach Bobby Petrino, who is making his ninth bowl appearance and sixth at Louisville, knows his football team will be playing an athletic and fast football team at Nissan Stadium, and i working hard to get his football team ready for another big-time opponent.
"They have good football players," Petrino said of the Aggies. "They have good schemes. They are very-well coached. They are fast team, especially at the skill positions. They're fast on defense. Â They have some really good rush guys so we have to protect. We have to get the ball out on time because we won't have extra time."
Petrino, who is the main play caller, knows his offense will be in for a big challenge against an aggressive, fast defense that is one of the best at getting into the backfield and causing havoc in the running and passing games.
"They are good players," Petrino said about the Aggies' defense. "They are well-coached. They can bring it off the edge. They try to make you hold the ball with their coverage, so it all works together."
There are a lot of advantages of playing in a bowl game, and Petrino looks at it as a close to the regular season, but thinks teams can use it to spring board into the next season.
"I always consider a bowl game as No. 1, finishing your season," Petrino. "We want to finish it for the seniors. No. 2 it's the start of next season. The early rankings come out and it's about what you have coming back and how did you finish the year. If we can finish strong, it's great for our seniors, it's great for the guys who are leaving and it's great for the players who are coming back."
The Cardinals are fortunate to be able to make the short trip to Nashville, but Petrino thinks he can create a huge home-field advantage for his football team.
"It will be great to see all of our fans," Petrino said. "Having a big crowd always helps. It helps us on third down and helps with our communications, so I know we will have the home-field advantage."
After a good two weeks of practice, the Cardinals will walk-through on Christmas Eve before boarding the buses on Christmas Day for the short three-hour trip to Tennessee.
"We will give the players a little time off before we practice," Petrino said. "We want to make sure we are ready at game time, both physically and mentally. We will have three practices when we get down there."
The Cardinals will practice on Saturday at Father Ryan High School in Nashville, Tenn., at 9:30 a.m.
