Mariya Moore had a team-high 23 points on 6-of-12 shooting.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Mariya Moore had a team-high 23 points, Myisha Hines-Allen added 20 off the bench, but the University of Louisville women's basketball team fell 79-66 to Dayton on Sunday night in the Gulf Coast Showcase in Estero, Fla.
The contest featured eight ties and nine lead changes, and it wasn't until five minutes were left in the game that Dayton was able to overcome its early deficit and pull away for the win.
The Flyers took advantage of their trips to the free throw line, going 11-of-12 from the charity stripe. Eleven of their attempts came within the final three minutes of the contest, and they finished the game 19-for-21 at the line.
Hines-Allen, who was one of five players named to the all-tournament team, did her best to take over the game, making up for nearly half of the team's offense. She scored 16 of Louisville's 38 points, shooting 5-of-11 from the field and hitting all five of her free throws.
It wasn't enough, though, to offset two of Dayton's biggest offensive threats in the final 20 minutes.
Kelley Austria, who played in the NCAA Sweet 16 between the two programs a season ago, scored 12 of her 18 points in the fourth period. Amber Deane had 10 points in the frame, eight coming from the free throw line for the Flyers, who made 10 field goals in the period and outscored the Cardinals 33-22.
The No. 22 Cardinals (1-4) had a promising start to the game, outscoring the Flyers 18-9 in the first period. Louisville opened the game with a 9-0 run over the first 3:29 and then pushed the lead to 14-2 on a Hines-Allen jumper.
Moore had a heavy hand in Louisville's early offensive success, producing nine points, including a 4-for-4 performance from the charity stripe, in the first period. She finished the first half with 16 points. Defensively, Louisville stifled Dayton to just 4-of-19 shooting.
Dayton stole the momentum in the second period, converting Louisville's 11 turnovers into nine points. The Cardinals connected on just three field goals in the period and went 3-for-8 at the free throw line.
Deane gave the Flyers their first lead of the game with 2:23 remaining in the half, connecting on a 3-pointer to put Dayton ahead 26-24. Moore knocked down a pair of free throws, and a jumper by Hines-Allen with 23 seconds left tied the game at 28 apiece.
Taja Cole finished the game with a season-best 11 points to go with five rebounds and a team-high two steals.
The Cardinals return to action on Thursday in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge at Michigan State on ESPN2.
