EAST LANSING, Mich. – Asia Durr and Mariya Moore scored 20 points apiece and led the University of Louisville women's basketball team to an 85-78 upset victory over No. 19 Michigan State on Thursday night.
The Cardinals (2-4), who move to 2-0 in Big Ten/ACC Challenge contests, put together their best offensive performance of the season in their first nationally televised game. Louisville hit 60.7 percent (17-of-28) of its shots in the first half and finished the game at a 52.7 percent (29-of-55) clip.
The freshman Durr, whose status was unknown coming into the contest, showed why she was the top-ranked prospect by multiple recruiting services. Durr came off the bench, shooting 6-of-11 from the field, and adding three steals and two assists. By halftime, she was one of three players – Briahanna Jackson (11), Moore (10) – who had double-digit points.
Defensively, Louisville had 16 steals – four from Moore – and pressured Michigan State into 27 turnovers.
Michigan State (4-2) made its run in the third-quarter, outscoring Louisville 23-17, to pull within seven. Branndais Agee pulled the Spartans within one on a layup at 62-61 with 8:49 remaining.
The Cardinals responded, though, with a 16-5 run that started with five quick points – a layup by Arica Carter and one of Durr's three 3-pointers.
The Spartans made one more charge with 34 seconds remaining on a Morgan Green layup, leaving Louisville with an 80-77 advantage. Two free throws apiece over the final 15 seconds from Moore and Durr sealed the victory and delivered the Cardinals their 23rd win over a ranked opponent over the last six seasons.
