Louisville will play its third of four straight at home to start the season on Saturday as the Cardinals play the North Florida Ospreys in the Cards' second game of the Brooklyn Hoops Holiday Invitational, a five-team, round-robin event. Louisville beat Hartford 87-52 on Tuesday as the Cardinals shot 50.8 percent from the field, limited the Hawks to 32.6 percent, held a 44-26 rebounding advantage and committed just seven turnovers.
Louisville played well at both ends of the court in its season-opening 86-45 victory over Samford, shooting 53.6 percent from the field while limiting the Bulldogs to 21 percent accuracy and collecting nine steals and nine blocked shots.
Damion Lee leads the Cardinals in scoring with 16.0 points per game. Chinanu Onuaku ranks second on the team in scoring with 14.5 points per game. The sophomore center also leads the team on the boards with 7.0 rebounds per game. Quentin Snider rounds out the top scorers with 10.5 points per game. He also leads the team in assists with 5.0 per game.
As a team, the Cardinals are shooting 52.1 percent from the field while holding opponents to 25.7 percent shooting. They are also shooting 41.2 percent from behind the arc while holding opponents to just 16.7 percent. They are averaging 45.0 rebounds and 17.0 assists per game.
High-scoring North Florida (3-0) opened its season with victories over Illinois (93-81) and UT Rio Grande Valley (106-84), burying a school-record 17 three-point goals in both games. An NCAA Tournament participant last year, the Ospreys beat Edward Waters 98-69 on Nov. 18.
North Florida leads the nation in three-pointers per game (16.0), is seventh in assists-to-turnovers ratio (2.35) and ranks eighth in three-point percentage (.480). Junior guard Dallas Moore, who has 25 assists with just one turnover in three games (leads nation), has averaged 24.3 points to lead five players averaging at least 13 points.
North Florida - which posted a 23-12 record last season, won the Atlantic Sun, made its first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance and returns four starters -- is picked to repeat as A-Sun champions. Senior 6-9 guard/ forward Beau Beech is the league's preseason player of the year and 6-8 senior forward Demarcus Daniels is the preseason defensive player of the year. Moore and junior foward Chris Davenport were both preseason all-conference selections.
This will be the first-ever matchup for the Cardinals against a North Florida team. Lipscomb (1-0) and Stetson are the only previous Atlantic Sun teams that Louisville has ever faced, holding a 5-1 record Stetson, including an 80-48 victory over the Hatters in Freedom Hall on Dec. 2, 2009 in the last meeting. Louisville will play another Atlantic Sun foe this season, playing Kennesaw State on Dec. 16 in the KFC Yum! Center.
