Cross Country To Compete in Pre-Nationals Meet

After a strong showing at the Greater Louisville Classic two weeks ago, the University of Louisville men's and women's cross country teams compete in the prestigious Pre-Nationals event at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park. The 17th ranked Louisville men will compete in the seeded race at 9:30 a.m. while the women will compete in the unseeded race at 11:30 a.m.

The meet is a preview of the upcoming NCAA Cross Country National Championship that will be held in Louisville on Nov. 21. The meet provides an opportunity for squads hoping to the weekend before Thanksgiving to run on the course.

The men's seeded race features 11 ranked teams and four teams receiving votes in the latest National Coaches Poll. Three of the 11 teams are ranked in the Top 10, including top ranked Colorado, third ranked Oregon and 10th ranked Georgetown.
The Cardinal men continued their strong start to the season when the men finished third in the Greater Louisville Classic and picked up their first national ranking since 2011. Louisville moved to No. 17 in the USTFCCA Top 30 Poll as well as No. 18 in the FloTrack Poll. Senior Edwin Kibichiy paced the Cardinals with a second place finish when he clocked a season best time of 23:55.21. Senior Japhet Kipkoech continued his impressive senior campaign with a personal best time of 23:57.24 en route to a fifth place finish. Ernest Kibet rounded out the top 10 with a season best time of 24:14.24. Calvin Chemoiywo finished 17th with a season best time of 24:23.35. Matt Stephenson clocked a personal best time of 24:48.47 and Daniel Fleace posted his season best of 25:40.63.
Competing in a strong field, the women posted an 10th place finish at the Greater Louisville Classic. Senior Benadate Cheruiyot paced the Cardinals with a season best time of 17:34.40 to finish 30th. Sophomore Mia Ross clocked a personal best time of 17:53.35 while Claire Noser posted a personal best time of 17:57.03 in the event.
After a week off, the Cardinals will compete in the ACC Cross Country Championships on Friday, Oct. 30 in Tallahassee, Florida.
