Track and Field Finishes Day One at the Vanderbilt Invitational
January 23, 2015 | Track & Field
The Louisville track and field team had a solid start on the first day of the Vanderbilt Invitational on Friday night at the Vanderbilt Student Rec Center. Once again sophomore thrower Dolly Nyemah shined in the weight throw, throwing another personal best for a second place finish.
"We made some progress tonight," said head coach Dale Cowper. "Dolly Nyemah improved her career best to 20 meters, which is a nice milestone for her to reach as a sophomore. She has more to come over the next few weeks as we saw a big foot foul in round five."
Nyemah finished second with a throw of 20.00m/65-7.5, passing her previous personal best of 19.79m 64-11.25 set at the Hoosier Open earlier this season. Teammates Rachel Serafin finished ninth with a throw of 17.28m/56-8.25 and Caitlin Gilmore finished 12th with a throw of 16.30m/53-5.75.
Maggie Gilbertson had another solid performance finishing fourth in the high jump. Gilbertson cleared a season best 1.71m/5-7.25. Bre'Yana Wash also had a season best in the long jump to finish sixth. Wash finished with a jump of 5.94m/19-6. Teammate Hannah Cox finished 12th with a jump of 5.61m/18-5 and Brianne Brown finished with a jump of 5.05m/16-7.
"Bre'Yana Wash worked through a tough day by squeezing into the final and then getting a quality jump off in round six," said Cowper. "We were pleased to see her work through some things tonight but look forward to seeing that jump come earlier in her series as the season continues."
On the men's side, Brad Vivace had another strong performance in the weight throw. Vivace finished fifth with a throw of 18.03m/59-2. Freshman Kaleb Rowe finished 16th in the triple jump with a jump of 13.73m/45-0.5.
Freshman Jacob Marguet led the way in the Pole Vault. Marguet finished 13th clearing 4.60m/15-1. Fellow freshman Eric Fox set his personal best clearing 4.45m/14-7.25 to finish 15th. Freshman Cain Cooper finished 16th, clearing 4.30m/14-1.25 for a personal best.
"It was great to see our young group of men's vaulters clearing bars," Cowper said. "The group is making progress with Jacob Marguet leading the way. Tonight was an indoor personal best for him."
The Cardinals will be back in action tomorrow at the Vanderbilt Invitational, events begin at 8:30 a.m.
