LOUISVILLE TEAM NOTES
Tuesday's game was the 37th meeting all-time between Louisville and Virginia Tech but the first since the Cardinals earned a 78-74 win over the Hokies on Jan. 26, 1995 in a Metro Conference matchup at Freedom Hall.
Louisville has won 10 straight games against Virginia Tech, including the final nine meetings in the Metro. The two schools competed as Metro Conference foes from 1978-1995.
The Cardinals improved to 10-0 this season when outrebounding their opponent after finishing with a 40-33 edge on the glass on Tuesday night.
After holding a 43-24 lead after 20 minutes on Tuesday, Louisville improved to 74-1 over the last three when leading at halftime, including a 14-0 mark this season.
Tuesday marked the 12th time this season the Cardinals have limited an opponent to 25 points or less in the first half.
Louisville produced two runs of 8-0 or better on Tuesday -- a 15-0 run during a span of 4:02 in the first half to move a 2-2 tie to a 17-2 advantage and an 18-0 run over a stretch of 5:32 covering the final 2:38 of the first half and the first 2:54 of the second half. Overall, Louisville has created 34 runs of 8-0 or better in 17 games this season.
The Cardinals made 10 three-point baskets on Tuesday, one shy of their season-high of 11 against Cal State Northridge on Dec. 23.
Louisville made 40-percent (10-for-25) of its three-point shots against Virginia Tech marking the sixth time this season they have finished at 40-percent or higher from beyond the arc.
The Cardinals dished out 19 assists on Tuesday, their second highest total of the season trailing only the 21 against FIU on Dec. 5.
Louisville matched a season-low committing only seven turnovers on Tuesday, the third time this season they have finished with that total. It marked the fifth time this season they have finished with fewer than 10 turnovers in a game, including the fourth time in the last six games.
With eight blocked shots against the Hokies, the Cardinals have blocked eight or more shots seven times this season.
Louisville finished with season lows in free throws made (six) and free throw attempts (seven) on Tuesday. The six made free throws were the fewest for the Cardinals since making just five against FIU on Dec. 19, 2012, while the seven attempts were the fewest since finishing with only four against Notre Dame on March 9, 2012.
The Cardinals matched a season-low with just three steals while Virginia Tech committed only eight turnovers, the fewest for a Louisville opponent this season.
Louisville improved to 11-1 at home this season and 77-10 all-time at the KFC Yum! Center, now in its fifth season as the home facility for the Cardinals.
LOUISVILLE PLAYER NOTES
Senior Chris Jones dished out a career-best 11 assists on Tuesday night, one better than his previous best of 10 at Wake Forest just nine days ago (Jan. 4).
The 11 assists for Jones were the most for a Louisville player since Russ Smith had 13 assists in an 81-48 win over Connecticut on March 8, 2014 at the KFC Yum! Center.
Sophomore Terry Rozier scored a team-leading 16 points making 6-of-12 shots from the field, including 4-of-6 three-point attempts. It marked the second straight game and the seventh time this season Rozier has led the Cardinals in scoring, the most for any player.
The four three-pointers for Rozier on Tuesday were just one shy of his career-high of five against Indiana on Dec. 9.
Senior Wayne Blackshear reached double-figures in scoring for the 13th time this season scoring 15 points after making 6-of-10 shots from the field, including a trio of three-pointers.
Sophomore Mangok Mathiang scored a season-high 11 points, including 10 in the first half. He set a career high for field goals made converting on 5-of-7 attempts against the Hokies.
Mathiang also had eight rebounds marking the fourth time this season he has pulled down eight or more in a game.
After not reaching double-figures in scoring in each of the last two games, junior Montrezl Harrell finished with 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting from the field on Tuesday.
Harrell added eight rebounds marking the fifth time this season he has finished with eight or more rebounds in a game.
Harrell also matched season highs with three blocked shots and three assists on Tuesday.
Freshman Quentin Snider dished out a career best four assists, one better than his previous high of three against Savannah State on Nov. 24.
