No. 4-seed Louisville 71, No. 13 Manhattan 64
March 20, 2014
NCAA Tournament Second Round
Amway Center, Orlando, Fla.
TEAM NOTES
- Louisville captured its 30th win of the year, becoming the first and only school to achieve at least 30 victories each of the last three seasons. The Cardinals, currently 29-5, posted a school record 35 victories a season ago en route to their third NCAA title, and totaled 30 victories in 2011-12. Only three other schools have the opportunity to reach that feat: Syracuse (27-5), Duke (26-8), and Kansas (24-9).
- Louisville has won six-straight games and 21 of its last 22 postseason contests.
- Louisville improved to 7-1 against the No. 13 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
- The Cardinals knocked down 27 free throws in the game, tying for the second-highest total made in an NCAA Tournament game in school history. Louisville also connected on 27 against North Carolina (March 25, 1972) and Tulsa (March 15, 1996 in overtime).
- Louisville's 77.1 percent (27 of 35) performance at the free throw line marks the third-consecutive game the Cardinals have shot better than 70 percent from the charity stripe.
- Louisville's eight blocked shots are tied for the third most in an NCAA Tournament game in school history. The feat was achieved four times previously, most recently against Southern Miss on March 13, 1994.
- Louisville grabbed 42 rebounds in the victory, the Cardinals' highest total in an NCAA Tournament game since collecting 47 against Siena on March 22, 2009. Louisville's 16 offensive rebounds is also the most in an NCAA Tournament game since the 2009 Siena contest.
- Louisville had 22 points off turnovers, its most in an NCAA Tournament game since tallying 24 against Colorado State on March 23, 2013.
- The Cardinals defense held Manhattan to 64 points, tying for the second-lowest total this season. The Jaspers' seven offensive rebounds is also the second-lowest total this year.
PLAYER NOTES
- Russ Smith's steal less than a minute into the contest made the senior the school's all-time career steals leader. He entered the game tied with former teammate Peyton Siva (2009-13) at 254 and now has 255 after collecting a steal later in the game.
- Smith's first steal of the game gave him 72 for the year, putting him into the top 10 on the school's single-season list. After tallying his second of the game, giving him 73, he moved into 10th on the school's single-season list. He is the only player in school history to appear on the list three times.
- Smith's two steals pushed him into a tie for first place on Louisville's NCAA Tournament career steals list. He tied Charles Jones, who totaled 24 from 1980-84.
- Smith finished with a game-high 18 points, moving him to second place on the school's NCAA Tournament career scoring list with 214. He passed Pervis Ellison and Darrell Griffith, who each scored 203 career points in the NCAA Tournament, and sits 10 behind the leader Milt Wagner, who has 224 (1981-86).
- Smith knocked down 11-of-15 free throws, the third time this season he has hit double-digit free throws. He elevated his career total to 477, just 14 shy of the school's all-time leader LaBradford Smith (491 free throws, 1987-91).
- Luke Hancock had four thefts in the game, tying for fifth most in an NCAA Tournament game in school history. That total was reached 13 times previously, with Peyton Siva doing it most recently against Michigan in the 2013 national championship game.
- Montrezl Harrell tied his career high with four blocks, which is tied for third most in an NCAA Tournament game in school history (achieved nine times previously). Gorgui Dieng tallied four twice in the tournament last season, first against Oregon and then against Duke.
- Harrell recorded his 11th career double-double, totaling 12 points and 13 rebounds. Eight of his rebounds came on the second half. The last double-double recorded in an NCAA Tournament game was achieved by Chane Behanan (15 points, 12 rebounds) against Michigan in the 2013 NCAA Championship.
- Harrell registered his 92nd and 93rd dunks of the season in the victory. He now has 137 for his career, 19 shy of Darrell Griffith (156 dunks, 1976-80) for No. 2 all-time.
- Chris Jones tallied 11 points, compiling a season best 6-of-6 performance from the charity stripe. He also had five rebounds, three assists, and two steals.
