LOUISVILLE TEAM NOTES
Tuesday's game marked the first ever matchup on the hardwood between the Cardinals and Matadors. Louisville has won 12 straight games against first-time opponents.
Cal State Northridge is coached by former Louisville assistant Reggie Theus, who is in his second season with the Matadors. Theus is one of 27 former Rick Pitino assistants or players who have risen to a collegiate head coaching position. Pitino has a collective 39-10 record in games against his former assistants.
Louisville extended its home winning streak against non-conference foes to 35 games dating back to December 2010. The Cardinals are 8-0 this season and were 9-0 in 2013-14, 7-0 in 2012-13 and 11-0 in 2011-12 in non-conference home games.
The Cardinals improved to 31-5 in the month of December over the last four years, including a 19-1 mark the last three seasons.
The 11-0 start for the Cardinals in 2014-15 continues their best opening stretch to a season since starting the 2011-12 season with an 12-0 mark.
Louisville has led at the half in each of its 11 games this season, including a 36-25 advantage on Tuesday night. The Cardinals have a 71-1 record the last three seasons (29-0 in 2012-13 and 31-1 in 2013-14) when leading at halftime.
Louisville produced two runs of 8-0 or better on Tuesday - a 12-0 run over a span of 2:34 in the first half to increase a 3-2 edge to a 15-2 advantage and a 10-0 run over a span of 2:26 in the second half to extend a 62-47 cushion to 72-47. Overall, the Cardinals have created 28 runs of 8-0 or better this season through the first 11 games.
The Cardinals have limited their opponents to less than 60 points in seven of 11 games this season.
Entering the night ranked fifth in the nation at 10.7 steals per game, Louisville finished with 14 on Tuesday matching the second highest total of the season. It marked the ninth time in 11 games this season they have finished with 10 or more steals.
Cal State Northridge became the fourth Louisville opponent this season to finish with more turnovers (20) than made field goals (19).
The Cardinals matched a season-high with 11 blocked shots equaling the total against Cleveland State on Nov. 26.
Tuesday's game marked just the second time this season Louisville has not won the rebounding battle after equaling Cal State Northridge with 36 rebounds each.
Louisville finished 11-of-27 from behind the three-point arc on Tuesday connecting for its most three-pointers in a game since making 13-of-23 at SMU on March 5, 2014. The 27 three-point attempts were the second most this season behind the 29 against Ohio State on Dec. 2.
Finishing 0-for-3 from behind the three-point line on Tuesday, Cal State Northridge became the second team this season to be held without a made three-pointer (Savannah State was 0-for-16 on Nov. 24).
Louisville's 18 assists were the second-highest total of the season behind only the 21 against FIU on Dec. 5.
UofL moved to 155-9 over the last 14 seasons under Pitino when scoring 80 or more points, including 7-0 this year.
LOUISVILLE PLAYER NOTES
Senior Wayne Blackshear made his first seven shots from the field en route to scoring a career best 31 points, including 23 in the first half. Blackshear set career highs for field goals made and attempted (11-of-17) as well as three-pointers made and attempted (6-of-11).
Blackshear became the third Louisville player this season to score 30 or more points in a game joining Terry Rozier (32 points against WKU on Saturday) and Montrezl Harrell (30 points against Minnesota on Nov. 14).
The first half performance by Blackshear marked the second straight half a Louisville player has scored 20 or more points following the 26-point outing in the second half of Saturday's win at WKU by Terry Rozier. Prior to that, the last time a Louisville player scored 20 or more points in a half came on March 13, 2014 when Russ Smith had 27 in the first 20 minutes against Rutgers.
Blackshear also matched a career-high with four steals reaching that total in a game for the sixth time at Louisville.
Sophomore Terry Rozier made 5-of-9 shots for 16 points marking the 10th time in 11 games this season he has reached double-figures.
Rozier added a game-high five assists, his second highest total of the season behind the seven against Ohio State Dec. 2.
Sophomore David Levitch scored a career-high nine points making 3-of-4 three-point attempts (both career highs).
Making his second start of the season and the 15th of the career, sophomore Mangok Mathiang matched a career-high with four blocked shots on Tuesday night. He also added a career-best three steals and matched a career-high with two assists to go with six points and six rebounds in 30 minutes.
Freshman Anas Mahmoud equaled career-highs finishing with seven rebounds and three blocked shots in 25 minutes.
Freshman guard Shaqquan Aaron made his collegiate debut on Tuesday pulling down two rebounds and dishing out one assist in five minutes of action.
Louisville played without Montrezl Harrell, who served a one-game suspension by the ACC after receiving a flagrant foul two during the Cardinals' victory at WKU on Saturday.
