The Cardinals defeated Barry 91-71 on Nov. 1 in their first exhibition of the year. The Cardinals shot 52.4 percent from the field and limited the Buccaneers to 33.3 percent accuracy. Terry Rozier totaled a game-high seven assists and eight rebounds, adding 15 points.
Senior Wayne Blackshear scored a team high 22 points and chipped in four rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Forward Montrezl Harrell contributed 18 points and five rebounds, while center Mangok Mathiang scored 11 points to round out those in double-digits for the Cardinals.
Coached by UofL graduate and former assistant Scott Davenport, the Knights reached NCAA Division II Tournament last season with a 23-8 record, participated in the 2014 NCAA Division II Championship first round and advanced to the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament title game last season. The Knights fell 86-79 in an exhibition game at Cincinnati on Nov. 3 as senior forward Jake Thelen led Bellarmine with 21 points, seven assists and six rebounds. Bellarmine shot 56.6 percent from the field for the game, including 70.8 percent in the first half when the teams battled to a 46-46 tie.
Bellarmine is ranked 13th nationally by Basketball Times, 16th by the Division II Bulletin and the Knights are the choice to win the East Division of the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Thelen (15.3 ppg, 7.1 rpg in 2013-14) was a preseason All- America selection by Basketball Times. Thelen grabbed three rebounds in 19 minutes as a starter the last time the teams met in 2012.
Louisville has won all 12 regular season meetings against Bellarmine University. That figure is not inclusive of four exhibition games the teams played in 2005, 2009, 2011 and 2012 -- all UofL victories. Louisville won the first meeting 79-52 at Bellarmine on Dec. 6, 1960, a year in which John Turner lead the Cardinals to a 21-8 record and Uof L's third NCAA Tournament appearance.
Gorgui Dieng scored 14 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and Montrezl Harrell scored 16 points on 8-of-9 shooting to lead Louisville to a 65-47 exhibition victory over Bellarmine in the last meeting between the teams (11-7-12). The Cardinals limited the Knights to 26.7 percent from the field and UofL handed out 19 assists on 26 field goals. Chris Dowe scored 19 points and pulled down 11 rebounds to lead the Knights.
