Louisville Focuses on Boston College and QB Tyler Murphy

LOUISVILLE, Ky.- University of Louisville defensive coordinator and safety Jermaine Reve previewed Saturday's game versus Boston College at Alumni Stadium in Chestnut Hills, Mass.
(Opening statement) "Getting to where we want to get is you got to go through the tough times and you have to be able to handle that and move on. It's another week this week, have a very talented team we are going to face that gives you some challenges with what they do offensively so we understood that we have to turn our focus to them and get ready to play a team that is on a role right now."
(On how to prepare against a running quarterback) "You have to make sure you all are on the same page, communication is important. You have to be physical up front in the run game, you have to set edges, you have to understand your gap fits and where your help is you know inside, outside those kind of things because when the quarterback is a runner, it becomes truly 11-on-11 and if you don't fit it right you can create a seem in your defense and that is how they have been getting those long runs with the quarterback."
(On if it helps that he has coached against Tyler Murphy last year) "Not really, it is a different offense. Obviously playing against him and knowing him that kind of thing I think he is a talented individual that has done a great job where he is now but at the end of the day it comes down to us getting lined up and playing with effort and energy, the things we need to do to be successful."
(On why they have defended running quarterbacks so well this season) "The key is that everybody understands the leverage like I said, understand your gap fits. You have to make sure that you keep the quarterback in relation to where your help is and everybody is in their gap. It sounds kind of simple but if guys are in their gaps, know where their fits are and then you have to play with effort and energy and you have to be able to play the blocks when they come because they are a big and physical line and they like to try and impose their will on you."
(On what he saw on film from the Florida State game) "First of all, I think it is a good example of when you look at the first half we are playing pretty well, only gave up 7 points there and then you face a Heisman Trophy quarterback that is talented and you maybe don't have the communication that you need on a couple plays and then he makes some plays and then you have the result that you have so you have to use it as a learning experience, understand that we are in one of the premier conferences in the country, played the former Heisman Trophy winner and the team that won the National Championship and that have done that for a reason and I think it is a good lesson for us. We did it for a half now we have to continue to do it for four quarters and finish the deal. I think our guys did a great job understanding that, they know where we are, they know what we need to do to get that kind of game done but the thing now is we have to turn our attention to a talented BC team and try and go get a win on the road."
(On the depth status on the defensive due to the injury of Pio Vatuvei) "We will try and get a few more guys involved, (Johnny) Richardson has been playing a little bit and (DeAngelo) Brown can play some more. I think it is important that you keep the big guys up front to try and keep those guys fresh. Obviously Pio has been a mainstay in what we have been doing but you know it creates opportunities for other guys and by doing that sometimes injuries creates depth in your team. What I mean is that when a guy goes down, maybe a guy that you wouldn't normally play as many snaps gets an opportunity to play and then he showcases what he can do and all of a sudden when the guy comes back you have more depth so I have always believed in that injuries can sometimes create depth. It is an opportunity for our young players that maybe haven't played as much to get some snaps and show what they can do."
(On what Keith Kelsey and James Burgess do for the defense) "Really good players, understand the system, really work hard, they prepare each week. They are both really quarterbacks of the defense, they do a good job of communicating and they are talented guys. You know the interception that Burgess had in the Florida State game was one of the better interceptions I have seen from a linebacker and both guys do the things you do to be a good quarterback of the defense. They prepare, they communicate well, they know the system, they are able to make plays because they have some speed and athletic ability and they finish at the ball."
(On how to keep the bad half from the defense carrying over to the next game) "Each week you have to keep grinding whether you do as well as you wanted to or maybe you didn't do as well as you liked. It is a new challenge so what we have to do is to turn our focus to a talented BC team and understand that it is going to be challenge to get a win up there and we have to go in with the idea that we have to play physical and aggressive and be ready to stop the thinks that they do well."
(On his health) It feels great being back the last couple games. I'm really getting my feet up under me. It feels great, just being back out there with my brothers. It's just exciting to be out there playing the game."
(On bouncing back after the Florida State loss) We keep that from carrying on, it's just motivation. We've seen how well we can play. We've seen how good we can be in one half, and we've seen ourselves not play up to our potential in the second half. It all comes from dedication and things like that. So that's a testament for our defense, to come out and respond and show that we really are the best defense."
(On facing a run-first Boston College offense) One of the main challenges is just keeping your eyes on your man. If you don't keep your eyes on your man, you could give up a big play. Teams like that, that run the ball every play, they can play-action out of nowhere for a big play. So it's our responsibility to keep our eyes on our responsibility.
(On what makes BC different from other teams they've faced thus far) First of all, they have a great, talented quarterback. He's a very elusive quarterback. And they come out with a bunch of different offensive formations and they move guys around. They move offensive tackles in, so it's a lot to prepare for. You've got to really get in and prepare for it because you don't know what formation they're going to give us."
(On when the focus shifted from the FSU loss to Boston College) Immediately. Once we got that Thursday out of our system, that Sunday it was time to roll. It's a new week, a new challenge. It's a whole new team, a totally different team from what we played last week and a totally different team from what our defense has seen all year. So we have to prepare. We have to be ready to play.
(On if the secondary talks about leading the nation in interceptions) We're kind of chatty and play around with each other about it, but that's not our main priority. Our main priority is to do your job in this defense. If everyone does their job, we all look good. That's something that we all care about. We want everyone to look good. We have people leading the nation in interceptions, and James Burgess, he's coming too. We just motivate each other. We all want to look good on defense. We play for each other, and that's how we do it."
