Volleyball falls to Wake Forest
November 15, 2014 | Women's Volleyball
"This was a disappointing loss, not because of our opponent because Wake played an outstanding match, but because I did not see any leadership from our leftside hitters," said UofL head coach Anne Kordes. "Russell played like the ACC Player of the Year tonight, you could tell she wanted to go out on her senior night on a high note. I need to see some leadership and we only have three more games for it to come out."
The Cards were led by Maya McClendon's 11 kills and Janelle Jenkins' nine kills and two blocks. UofL drops to 7-8 in the ACC and 15-12 overall. Wake Forest improves to 15-13 and 5-9 in the league. Wake had 56 kills to UofL's 39 and outdug the Cards 38-23.
In the first set, after neither team could pull away, the Cards ran off five straight to get set point. Wake Forest tied at 24, 25, and 26 and then a kill by Jazmen Russell, her ninth of the set gave the win to the Deacons at 28-26.
In the second set, Wake used a 6-0 run midway through to take a 17-9 lead. The Cards pushed back but had no answer for Russell, who had 11 kills in the set and had WFU hitting at a torrid .567. UofL scored once after set point to make it 24-19 but a kill by Kylie Long gave the win to Wake.
Wake Forest had a 7-1 run in the third set to go up 15-8. The Cards put together a little push late but after pulling to within four at 20-16, Wake ran off five straight for the 25-16 win and the sweep.
The Cardinals return to Louisville for their final three matches of the regular season with Duke, UNC and Pitt left on the slate.
