
Volleyball Falls to Pitt

Pitt, 18-3 overall, raised its league mark to 6-2 with the 25-15, 25-17, 26-28, 29-27 win. UP hit .259 with 10 blocks and 15 service aces. The Panthers were paced by Kate Yeazel's 17 kills and seven blocks. Maria Genitsardi had a double-double with 13 kills and 15 digs, adding four aces. The Cards were led by Janelle Jenkins 14 kills and six digs. UofL had 16.5 blocks and five aces but had just 47 kills to UP's 65.
The Cardinals got rocked from the service line in the first set. Although they were close early on, the score was tied at nine when Lindsey Zitzke served for six straight points to go up 15-9. The Cards scored twice before Maria Genitsaridi came in and scored 7-0. The Panthers hit .636 in the set and had five blocks in the 25-15 win.
Pittsburgh runs ruled the second set. A 6-0 run by the Panthers was powered by Jessica Wynn's strong serving saw the Cards trail 17-10. The Cards rallied a bit before falling 25-17.
The Cardinals showed signs of life with a 28-26 win in the third set that saw the opponents tie 15 times and the lead see-saw six times. UofL managed a three-point margin at 19-16 but the Panthers answered immediately to tie at 19. The Cards reopened the three-point margin at 23-20 on a pair of Pitt errors but again UP tied. Tied at 26, Pitt's Jessica Wynn had a service error and then Janelle Jenkins aced for the win.
Zitzke, who had five aces in the match, served the first three points of the fourth set including an ace . The Cards battled back and took their biggest lead at 19-14. UofL had set point at 24-22 but Zitzke scored three straight to tie at 24. The two teams traded match points before an error by UofL and a kill by Kate Yeazel gave the Panthers set and match point.
The Cards return to action Oct. 31 when they take on Syracuse in the KFC Yum! Center at 7 p.m.
