No. 7 Louisville Opens Conference Play with SMU on Sunday

No. 7 Louisville will host SMU on Sunday, Dec. 29 in the KFC Yum! Center at 3:00 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on ESPNU. The game can also be heard live on the Cards Radio with Matt Andrews and Adrienne Johnson, carried locally on WKRD 790 AM.
Shoni Schimmel scored a season-high 30 points, including 13 on 16 free throws, in Louisville's 69-62 win over No. 11 Colorado last Saturday. Schimmel secured the win for the Cardinals in the close game. Neither team led by more than six until Louisville broke it open with a 7-0 run to go up 53-46 with 6:42 left. Colorado chipped away at the lead. Brittany Wilson's layup with 24 seconds left cut the gap to 65-62. Schimmel sank two free throws to go up 67-62. The Buffaloes couldn't convert on the next possession and Schimmel's layup sealed the victory.
Schimmel leads three Cardinals averaging double figures with 16.1 points per game. Hammond ranks second on the team in scoring, averaging 10.8 points. Asia Taylor leads the team in rebounding with 6.5 boards per game, while averaging 9.7 points per game. Hammond ranks second on the team in rebounding with 6.4 per game. Bria Smith rounds out the top scorers with 9.8 points per game.
SMU enters conference play with an overall record of 9-2. Senior guard Keena Mays scored 32 points to lead SMU to an 84-79 overtime victory at North Texas last Saturday. Mays scored the last four points in regulation for the Mustangs (9-2), hitting a layup with 52 seconds to pull SMU to within one. After Alexis Hyder made the first of two free throws to push the lead back to two with 35 seconds left, Mays blazed past the entire defense for a game-tying layup with 29 seconds left.
The Mustangs are led by the American Athletic Conference's leading scorer Mays, who is averaging 20.9 points per game. Senior forward Akil Simpson ranks second on the team in scoring with 14.1 points per game. Simpson also leads the team in rebounding with 8.3 boards per game. Rounding out the top scorers is junior forward Destynee Hives-McCray with 11.0 points per game.
SMU leads the series 1-0 against the Cardinals. The Mustangs defeated the Cardinals 71-54 in the Coors Classic held in Boulder, Colo. during the 1996 season.
