Randi Ewing had 10 kills and five blocks to lead the University of Louisville to a 25-15, 25-18, 25-18 win over Temple to stay undefeated in The American at 10-0.
Without Head Coach Anne Kordes, who remained in Louisville to await her due date this weekend, assistant coach Lee Maes was at the helm and coached the Cards to .250 hitting and 12-5 blocking. Maya McClendon joined Ewing in double digit kills with 10 and senior Emily Juhl had nine kills and two aces. Temple was led by Jennifer Iacobini's seven kills. Caitlin Welch had a match high 16 digs. Brooke Mattingly had six kill.
"We prepped really well all week for Temple and it showed up in our execution, especially on the block," said Maes. "It was nice to have Haley Pouliezos back from injury to stabilize the back row."
The Cards, 15-7, rolled 25-15 in the first set, led by .258 hitting and four kills by both Emily Juhl and Randi Ewing. U of L managed to carve out a slight lead at the first Temple timeout with a 15-10 edge. The Cards widened the gap to 10 at 23-10 before Brooke Mattingly killed an overpass and a service error by TU gave the set to the Cards.
The Cards tore out to a 10-4 lead early but Temple fought back to within one at 14-13. U of L responded with a 9-1 run to go up 23-14. Temple scored on three U of L hitting errors before falling 25-18.
In the third set, U of L used a 6-2 run to buy some breathing room at 16-9. The Owls showed their grit with a 5-2 run of their own that sparked a timeout by the Cardinals at 17-13. Louisville got back on track and rolled to the 25-18.
The Cards take on old rival Memphis on Sunday at 2 p.m. in Memphis to bring a seven match road grind to an end.
