Janelle Jenkins had 10 kills and two blocks to lead the University of Louisville volleyball team to a 25-21, 25-17, 25-20 sweep of Middle Tennessee Tuesday night in Murfreesboro.
"Brooke Mattingly was huge! She personified senior leadership out there on the block and then hitting around a double block all night. Emily Juhl's serving let us go on runs that bought us some breathing room and the passing of Caitlin Welch and Haley Pouliezos got our hitters going," said U of L head coach Anne Kordes.
The Cards, 12-7, hit .309 with five blocks and four aces. Maya McClendon hit 11 kills and senior Brooke Mattingly hit .562 with nine kills on 15 swings, adding three blocks. MTSU, 13-8, was held to .177 hitting with five blocks and three aces. The Blue Raiders were led by Chelsea Ross' 13 kills and 10 digs.
U of L stayed ahead in the first set until the Blue Raiders used a 6-1 run to tie at 13 and then took the lead at 17-16. After a Cardinal timeout, U of L came out and ran off a 7-2 run for the win that came on two straight Maya McClendon kills and a block by Randi Ewing for the 25-21 win. Maya McClendon led with six kills in the set.
In the second set, U of L had a 6-0 run to go up 12-9 and Middle could not close the gap with its .154 hitting. The Cards hit .324 led by Brooke Mattingly's five kills and three blocks in the 25-17 win.
In the third set, U of L had an 18-13 lead but the Blue Raiders managed to come back within three at 23-20, forcing a Cardinal timeout. U of L regrouped and scored two straight for the 25-20 win.
The Cards travel to Rutgers for a 7 p.m. match before heading to UConn for a 1 p.m. ESPNU-televised match in Storrs, Conn. as AAC action continues.
