LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville men's basketball guard Chris Jones has been named to the watch list of candidates for the 2014 Bob Cousy Collegiate Point Guard of the Year Award, presented annually by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
Named for Hall of Famer and former Boston Celtic Bob Cousy, the honor recognizes the top point guards in men's college basketball. This list of 45 student-athletes was created by a committee of media members and influential people within college basketball from around the nation.
Jones, the 2013 NABC National Junior College Division I Player of the Year, was a two-time first-team NJCAA All-American and was twice named Panhandle Conference Player of the Year. He averaged 21.8 points, 5.1 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 3.0 steals as a sophomore last season in leading Northwest Florida State College in Niceville, Fla., to a 30-4 record and its second consecutive national runner-up position. He ranked fifth in the nation in scoring and seventh in steals.
In three preseason scrimmages, the junior totaled 55 points, 16 rebounds, 15 assists, and eight steals. The Memphis, Tenn., native scored 24 points in the second Red-White game.
The watch list will be narrowed down to a final 20 in early February and then reduced to five by early March. A selection committee, which consists of Hall of Famers, media members, head coaches, and media relations contacts, has been appointed by the Hall of Fame to review the candidates in contention for the nation's top collegiate point guard award.
The Cousy Award winner will be presented the award on Championship Monday in Dallas at the Hall of Fame's Class of 2014 announcement and press conference.
Last season, guard Peyton Siva was a top-12 candidate for the award.
Michigan's Trey Burke was announced as recipient of the award prior to head coach Rick Pitino being announced as a member of the 2013 class for the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
The Cardinals play their first exhibition game on Oct. 29 against Kentucky Wesleyan in the KFC Yum! Center at 7 p.m. Louisville's second and final exhibition, also at home, will be held on Nov. 6 against Pikeville at 7 p.m.
