LOUISVILLE, Ky. - In its first BIG EAST road game of the season, the University of Louisville men's basketball team will play at Seton Hall on Wednesday, Jan. 9, in Newark, N.J.
The contest starts at 7:02 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN2, with Mike Patrick (play-by-play) and LaPhonso Ellis (analyst) calling the game. The radio broadcast will be available on WHAS 840 AM, and Paul Rogers (play-by-play) and Doug Ormay (analyst) will be on the call.
Louisville (13-1, 1-0 BIG EAST), which has enjoyed a week-long break, enters Wednesday's game ranked third by the Associated Press and fourth in ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll. Nationally, the Cardinals rank No. 2 in turnover margin (+8.4), No. 3 in steals per game (11.4) and fourth in scoring margin (+20.9). Louisville also boasts a top-25 national ranking in scoring defense, holding opponents to less than 58 points per game.
In their last game, the Cardinals opened BIG EAST play versus Providence with their eighth-straight victory, earning an 80-62 decision. Russ Smith led all scorers with 23 points off the bench, while four other Cardinals posted double-digit point totals. Gorgui Dieng, who made his first start since injuring his wrist, registered the lone double-double, with 11 points and 11 rebounds along with a game-high four blocks. Collectively, the team had its second-best shooting performance of the season, going 52.6 percent from the field. Kadeem Batts led Providence with 17 points in the losing effort.
Seton Hall (12-3, 1-1) was handed a 93-74 loss by Notre Dame over the weekend, ending the Pirates' seven-game winning streak. Seton Hall, however, had a pair of 21-point scorers in Fuquan Edwin and Aaron Cosby. The Fighting Irish had four of their starters in double figures, and the team shot 56.5 percent from the field. Notably, the group went 12-of-18 from beyond the arc.
The Pirates are under the direction of third-year head coach Kevin Willard, a former Louisville assistant coach. He has guided the program to a 46-34 overall mark. Currently, Edwin leads the team with 17.9 points per game and has a team-best 38 steals. Eugene Teague ranks first in rebounding, averaging 8.5 per game.
Last Meeting: The Cardinals and Pirates faced each other twice last season, with Louisville posting a 60-51 victory during the regular season and a 61-55 decision in the second round of the BIG EAST Tournament. Gorgui Dieng compiled 17 points, 24 rebounds and 11 blocks in the two games.
The PEYTON Watch: Peyton Siva is 20 points shy of becoming the 64th Louisville men's basketball player to reach 1,000 points. The Cardinals rank second all-time in 1,000 point scorers behind North Carolina's 67.
