
Softball Tops Murray State 7-1 in Fall Scrimmage

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Sophomore shortstop Whitney Arion went 2 for 2 with a home run and four RBIs to lead the University of Louisville softball team to a 7-1 win over Murray State in a fall scrimmage Sunday at Ulmer Stadium.
The Cards opened the scoring in the first inning when senior Jordan Trimble doubled, took third on a passed ball and came home on senior Alicja Wolny's sacrifice fly. Louisville added another run in the second. Freshman Jasmine Smithson-Willett drew a leadoff walk, took second on sophomore Maggie Ruckenbrod's sacrifice bunt and came home on Arion's RBI single to increase the lead to 2-0.
The Racers got a run back in the third when Mo Ramsey singled, took second on Shelbey Miller's sacrifice bunt and scored on Alexa Becker's RBI single to make it a 3-1 game.
The Cardinals used seven hits - including a three-run homer by Arion - to score five runs in the the fourth. Ruckenbrod was hit by a pitch and lifted for pinch runner Brittany Sims who was safe at second on Katelyn Mann's bunt. Arion followed with a shot over the left field fence to make the score 5-0. Jennifer Esteban singled and moved around to third on Jordan Trimble's base hit and came home on Katie Keller's RBI single. Wolny's singled Keller home to make the score 7-0.
Junior Rachel LeCoq got the win, allowing one earned run on five hits and striking out one in 4.0 innings of work. Junior Caralisa Connell surrendered one hit and struck out four in 3.0 innings to get the save. Trimble was 2 for 2 with a double and a run and Wolny was 2 for 3 with two RBIs.
Shelby Kosmecki took the loss, allowing seven runs, six earned, on seven hits and striking out two in 3.1. CheyAnne Gaskey allowed four hits in 2.2 innings of relief. Becker led Murray State offensively, going 2 for 2 with an RBI.
