LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville football team conducted its first major scrimmage of fall camp on Saturday morning at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium.
Head coach Charlie Strong ran his team through about 100 plays under cool and sunny skies on the turf. Strong put the football down in a number of different locations on the field and put the team through a number of special teams situations.
"It was good to get into the stadium today," said Strong following the scrimmage. "I thought the offense did a good job today, and I was pleased with how the running backs ran. There were a couple of long runs and big plays in the passing game. We didn't do a good job tackling on defense, and we gave up too many plays on the back end. We have to really improve on defense."
Teddy Bridgewater had the best day of the quarterbacks, missing on just four throws during the scrimmage. Will Stein was also very effective, moving the second unit to a number of scores.
The Cardinals, behind an experienced offensive line, were able to run the football, and recorded a few long drives and long touchdown runs during the course of the scrimmage. All six of the running backs (Dominique Brown, Jeremy Wright, Senorise Perry, Corvin Lamb, Zed Evans and Brandon Radcliff) received equal carries this morning and were all effective.
"The thing that I was most pleased with, and you can't coach, is intensity," said offensive coordinator Shawn Watson. "I thought the tailbacks ran well and the wide receivers did a really good job in the passing game. Our first offensive line did a really good job, but we have some things we need to clean up."
One notable stat was the offense didn't turn the ball over during the scrimmage. On defense, Roy Philon and Brandon Dunn stood out on the defensive line, and linebacker James Burgess had a big hit.
The Cardinals return to practice on Monday morning with the second two-a-day practice of camp.
