Louisville, Ky. - Every week this summer UofLSports.com will catch up with a member of the women's basketball team to see how they are preparing for the upcoming season. This week sophomore forward Shawnta' Dyer fills us in on what she has been doing since the season ended.
How was the transition going from High School basketball to Division I basketball last season? The Transition definitely was a challenge, for the pace of the game was faster, girls were stronger, and I was around talent similar to my own caliber. I enjoyed transitioning into a stronger player!
What is the best thing about playing for Louisville? I would have to say the best thing about playing for Louisville is the OUTSTANDING fan base. Our team is fortunate to have such dedicated fans that make the Yum Center feel like home. We appreciate you all for the support, more than you know! We are looking forward to seeing you all this upcoming season. L1C4!
At what age did you start playing basketball, and who taught you to play? I started playing basketball in the third grade. My Uncle Homer taught me to play, as I was on his YMCA youth basketball team. Oh, and guess what? I was the only girl!
What have you been doing this summer? I have been working on my individual skills this summer, which include ball handling, jump shots, and free throws. I also find time to go shopping and hang out with my teammates, of course!
What do you hope to improve for next season? One very important thing I hope to improve for the next season is becoming a better "student" of the game. Basketball is not simply putting the ball into the net, but strategizing and coming up with a game plan to outsmart your opponent.
What has the team been doing since the end of the season to get ready for the 2012-13 season? The team has been working hard on their individual skills, taking classes, and building our team chemistry every chance they get. We are making improvements in the off season, not only to become better basketball players, but also to become better people.
What is your best basketball memory? My best basketball memory is cheering my team on to the Sweet 16 my freshman year, as I did not play that year due to a fracture in my heel bone. I had opportunities to analyze and critique certain areas of the game, which helped me to become the player I am today.
What do you hope to accomplish on the court before you leave Louisville? I hope to win a National Championship before I leave Louisville!
Who is the biggest influence in your life and why? My mother is the biggest influence in my life. She taught me that success does not feel as good without a little bit of struggle. But most importantly, she taught me to always fight for what I think is right and to stay strong in what I believe... for it will help me become a better person throughout life's mysterious journey.
What is your dream job after you leave Louisville? My dream job after I leave the University of Louisville is to become and elementary teacher with an emphasis on Language Arts. I developed a love for education and a respect for educators early in my life.
What will be the team's strength this upcoming season? Our team's strengths are depth and experience! Get ready for the season, Card fans!
