Louisville, Ky. - Louisville head coach Jeff Walz has announced the addition of Indiana native and former Georgia assistant Cameron Newbauer as a new addition to his staff. Newbauer replaces Michelle Clark-Heard, who was named the head coach at Western Kentucky.
"We are thrilled to add the experience and work ethic of Cameron Newbauer to our staff," said Walz. "He is one of the best young assistants in the game whose energy and passion are unparalleled in the coaching industry. He brings a competitive intensity to our program that will engage recruits, bolster player development, and enhance our commitment to excellence in the classroom. Cameron is a tireless recruiter who has contributed to numerous Top 10 classes in his tenure and there is no doubt he will hit the ground running with our staff this spring."
Newbauer joins the Cardinal staff after spending the last five seasons at the University of Georgia under Hall of Fame coach Andy Landers. Soon after joining the Lady Bulldogs in June of 2007, Newbauer played a major role in the inking one of the nation's top-five recruiting classes in 2008. Then in 2009 he helped follow that up by inking a Top-10 recruiting class. Newbauer also helped guide the Lady Bulldogs to five consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances and back-to-back Sweet 16 appearances in 2010 and 2011.
"I am excited about the opportunity to work for Coach Walz and the University of Louisville," said Newbauer. "The facilities along with the tremendous fan support here at the university are the best in the country. President Ramsey and athletic director Tom Jurich have provided all the necessary resources to compete for a national championship and that is one of my goals in coming to the University of Louisville."
Prior to joining the Lady Bulldogs, Newbauer was the director of basketball operations for the Georgia men's basketball program from 2005-07. It was actually in his second stint with the Georgia men's staff. He rejoined the Bulldogs in the spring of 2005 after also serving as a graduate manager during the 2003-04 campaign. During the 2004-05 season, Newbauer was an assistant coach on the men's staff at Siena College, where he also was that program's director of basketball operations from 2001-03.
Newbauer joined the Georgia men's staff after working with former Georgia men's head coach Dennis Felton during a summer spent with USA Basketball. Newbauer served as an administrative assistant/manager for the U.S. National Team competing at the 2003 Junior World Championships in Greece. Felton was an assistant coach for that squad that compiled a 7-1 record in Greece.
Newbauer also gained a vast amount of experience working several of the nation's premier basketball camps, including Five Star, Eastern Invitational, Duke University and the University of Texas.
Newbauer played one season of basketball at Madonna College in Livonia, Mich., before transferring to Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne in his hometown. He graduated from IUPU Fort Wayne in 2001 with a bachelor's degree in elementary education. In his last year there, Newbauer served as a student assistant on the basketball staff. He also was a varsity assistant coach at Leo High School, where he played basketball while a student, for three seasons while at IUPU Fort Wayne.
He earned a master's degree in recreation and leisure studies from UGA in 2009. In May 2011, Newbauer married the former Sarah Millender. His younger sister, Andrea, is a junior guard on the Indiana basketball team.
