The Red and Black teams were back at it on Day Three of the Oklahoma City Challenge. Senior outfielder Chrisanna Roberts gives the details of Thursday's competition.
As a team we have run Papa John's Cardinal Stadium twice already in the past month. Being a senior, I felt confident I would never have to do that again in my career as a University of Louisville athlete. Well, I was wrong. I got the text this morning to meet at the football stadium and I optimistically thought, "Maybe we will just play a game of flag football?" Unfortunately Teena had other plans.
The dreaded stadium steps...
Each team had four items they had to carry with them along their journey up and down every step in the stadium. Two 20 pound weighted vests, one 25 pound kettle bell, and last but certainly not least, one 50 pound kettle bell. The first entire team, plus all four items, to make it to the opposite side of the stadium would win 300 points. As soon as we started I knew this was going to be a challenge. Imagine running up and down thousands and thousands of stairs? Now imagine doing that while carrying something resembling a 50 pound bowling ball? It was rough. The Red Team dominated this event by crossing the finish line while the Black Team still had two flights of stairs to go. This performance earned the Red Team the first 300 points of the day.
But, Teena's not tired yet...
As exhausted as we all were, we knew Teena would have something else up her sleeve for the last 100 points. One thing you learn when being trained by Teena Murray is that just when you think you're done for the day, you never actually are. The last event was a relay race in which six different members of your team would each perform a 600 yard shuttle. The first person would start at the goal line and run a giant suicide on the football field: to the 20 yard line and back, forty and back, 60 and back, 80 and back, and finally 100 and back. Once they completed all of this they could slap the next person in lines hand and they could begin. The first team to have six members of their team complete this would be victorious.
A dramatic finish...
As the race started the Black Team was able to jump out to an early lead. Unfortunately, that was short lived and soon the Red Team had caught up with help from the speed of Katie Keller. In fact, going into the last leg, the Red Team had a controlling 20 yard lead. However, with a dominating performance by senior and reigning Iron Cardinal, Katelyn Mann, the Black Team was able to overcome the deficit and capture the win earning them the final 100 points of the day. At the end of day three the Black team leads 450 points to 350 points.
As expected the final day will determine who will be crowned 2012 OKC Challenge Champions. Our coaches would not give us any hints as to what events will take place on the last and final day; however they have hinted it will be fun so we are all extremely pumped for tomorrow.
