LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Coming off a season-opening 79-51 victory over Manhattan Sunday afternoon at the KFC Yum! Center, the No. 2-ranked University of Louisville men's basketball opens the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament Thursday, Nov. 15, against Samford at 7 p.m. in the KFC Yum! Center.
The tournament will culminate with three games at the Atlantis resort in Bahamas on Nov. 22-24.
Thursday's game will air live on WHAS (Ch. 11 in Louisville), with Drew Deener (play-by-play) and Bob Valvano (color) calling the action. The contest also will be available on WHAS (840 AM), as Paul Rogers (play-by-play) and Doug Ormay (color) call the game.
The Cardinals (1-0) extended their season-opening game win streak to nine with a win over Manhattan, and head coach Rick Pitino improved his record in opening games to 24-3 as a collegiate head coach.
In the win over the Jaspers, junior Russ Smith led the Cardinals with 23 points and five steals, while senior point guard Peyton Siva added 10 points and 10 assists to record his second career double-double.
The Cardinals' bench outscored Manhattan's, 23-9, and was led by Kevin Ware's perfect 4-of-4 shooting performance for 10 points.
As a team, Louisville held Manhattan to 35.7 percent (15-42) from the field and scored 32 points off the 27 turnovers. Also, the Cardinals dominated the transition game, with a 17-0 advantage in fastbreak points.
Samford (1-1) lost its season-opener at Austin Peay on Nov. 9, but is coming off a home-opening victory against Martin Methodist, 59-40. Bulldogs' freshman Tim Williams led the team in both contests with 23 points, 10 rebounds, and 13 points, 10 rebounds, respectively.
Bennie Seltzer, previously an assistant coach at Indiana (2008-12), is in his first year as the Bulldogs' head coach. He was an assistant at Marquette (2006-08), when the Golden Eagles earned back-to-back trips to the NCAA Tournament.
