LOUISVILLE TEAM NOTES
- With Sunday's win, Louisville has won 18 of its last 20 season-openers, including nine straight overall.
- Head coach Rick Pitino improved to 24-3 in season-opening games collectively at his four collegiate coaching stops.
- Louisville has a 67-31 record all-time in season-openers (46-12 at home, 10-12 on road, 11-7 on neutral court).
- The Cardinals now own a 6-2 lead in the all-time series with Manhattan, including a 3-0 advantage in Louisville.
- Facing off against former assistant Steve Masiello, who is in his second season as the head coach at Manhattan, Pitino improved to 29-9 overall in games against teams coached by his former assistant coaches.
- Pitino now has a 2-0 record all-time against Manhattan.
- After holding 23 of its 40 opponents last season to 60 or fewer points, the Cardinals opened 2012-13 in the same fashion holding Manhattan to just 51 total points.
- Louisville has allowed 60 points or fewer in 19 of its last 28 home games dating back to the 2010-11 season.
- The Cardinals limited the Jaspers to just 15-of-42 shooting from the field for 35.7 percent. Last season, Louisville ranked sixth nationally in field goal percentage defense at .384.
- Louisville was outrebounded 37-33 in Sunday's opener. Last season, the Cardinals were 8-4 overall when being outrebounded.
- The 16 steals on Sunday were the most for Louisville since the 19 swipes against Chattanooga on Nov. 22, 2010.
- The Cardinals forced Manhattan into 27 turnovers on Sunday, the most for a Louisville opponent since Morehead State had 30 on Dec. 27, 2004.
- Winning the turnover battle 27-12, the Cardinals finished with 20 more attempts from the field and made an additional 13 shots from the field than the Jaspers.
- Louisville had eight players see at least 16 minutes of action on Sunday with only Peyton Siva (34 minutes) and Russ Smith (31 minutes) playing more than 30.
LOUISVILLE PLAYER NOTES
- Senior guard Peyton Siva earned his second career double-double finishing with 10 points and 10 assists.
- The 10 assists for Siva match a career high marking the third time he's reached double-figures in assists.
- The 10 assists on Sunday moved Siva into a tie for seventh on the Cardinals' career leaderboard with Billy Thompson (1982-86) with 459 total assists. Siva is 16 behind sixth-place Reece Gaines (1999-2003) at 475.
- Siva has handed out five or more assists in 31 of his last 41 games overall.
- With his one blocked shot on Sunday, junior center Gorgui Dieng moved into a tie for third on the Cardinals' career list at 185 with Billy Thompson (1982-86).
- Dieng has blocked a shot in 62 of his 70 career games as a Cardinal.
- Junior guard Russ Smith connected for a career best four three-point baskets on a career-high 13 attempts on Sunday.
- Smith finished with a game-high five steals on Sunday. Last year, Smith ranked third in the BIG EAST and 19th nationally with 2.2 steals per game.
- Sophomore Kevin Ware scored a career-high 10 points and connected for his first career three-point basketball in 15 minutes of action. Last season, Ware attempted only five three-point shots in 20 games played.
- Making his Cardinals' debut, junior guard Luke Hancock scored eight points and added four steals.
- Along with Hancock, freshman forward Montrezl Harrell made his debut in a Louisville uniform scoring six points with four rebounds and one blocked shot in 22 minutes.
- After missing the Cardinals' two exhibition games, sophomore forward Chane Behanan returned to the floor with a solid performance scoring eight points with nine rebounds and three steals (matching a career-high) in 24 minutes.
