New York City, N.Y. - - University of Louisville center Mario Benavides (Los Fresnos, Texas) was named to the Rimington Trophy Watch List on Wednesday for the third straight season.
Benavides, a junior, keyed the Cardinals' rushing attack in 2010, helping Louisville lead the BIG EAST and rank in the top 35 nationally in rushing at 175.0 yards per game. It was Louisville's highest rushing average since 2006, as the Cardinals topped 175 yards on the ground in six of 13 contests. He paved the way for eight 100-yard rushing efforts on the season, including seven by Bilal Powell, who was 11th in the nation in rushing.
Benavides started 12 games last season and 24 of 25 in his career. The award is named after former Nebraska great Dave Rimington, a two-time Outland Trophy Winner and member of the College Football Hall of Fame.
The winner will be announced on the Home Depot College Football Awards Red Carpet Show on Dec. 8 with the banquet taking place in Lincoln on Jan. 14, 2012.
