LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville women's lacrosse freshman Monica Negron was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday afternoon.
A Bel Air, Md., native, Negron earned the distinction after guiding the Cardinals to a 2-0 record in conference play last week. She helped the Louisville back line limit its opponents to just six goals per game - 12 combined goals.
In the 10-8 comeback over Rutgers, she was assigned the Scarlet Knights' top goal scorer, Marlena Welsh, who had just one goal and seven shots. Against Villanova, Negron held Justine Donodeo, the Wildcats' leading scorer, to zero goals on four shots. Statistically, Negron had a season-high five ground balls against Villanova and one draw control. She was part of a defense that helped Louisville hold Villanova to just 12 shots, seven draw controls and a lowly 44 percent (8-of-18) on clear attempts.
The Cardinals (10-4, 3-2 BIG EAST) will take to the road for an important two-game road swing, facing 13th-ranked Syracuse (5-7, 3-1 BIG EAST) on Thursday, April 21, and then heading to Storrs, Conn., for a contest against Connecticut on Saturday, April 23.
