
Angermeier Sets Career Best on Final Day of Virginia Tech Elite Meet

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Neil Angermeier set a career best in the high jump on the final day of the Virginia Tech Elite Meet to lead the University men's and women's track and field teams on Saturday afternoon in Blacksburg, Va., at Rector Field House.
Michael Edwards and Angermeier finished second and third, respectively, in the high jump. Angermeier cleared a career-best 2.15m/7-0.25 in the event, four-hundredths of a meter better than the fourth-place finisher.
Seon Powell competed in the triple jump, where he finished in fifth after leaping 14.69m/48-2.50.
On the women's side, Ahlivia Spencer and Khadija Abdullah earned wins in their respective events.
Spencer clocked a season-best 56.13 in the 400m open for a first-place finish, her first victory in the event of the year. The freshman earned her first collegiate win in the season-opener, winning the 600m at the Fast Start Invitational. Gabrielle Jackson placed sixth in the 400m run, also posting a season-best, with a time of 57.26.
Abdullah, meanwhile, continues to roll in the shot put. She registered her fourth-straight victory of the season in the event, with a toss of 16.59m/54-5.25. It is her second best throw of the season, only behind her season-opening throw of 16.96m/55-7.75, an NCAA automatic qualifying mark. D'Ana McCarty and Chinwe Okoro also posted top-five finishes, placing fourth and fifth, respectively.
In the women's high jump, Michelle Theophille took fourth, clearing 1.74m/5-8.50 for a season-best mark. Megan Schubert leapt to a seventh-place finish in the event, clearing 1.69m/5-6.50.
On the track, Saravia Richardson, who had a runner-up finish in the 60m finals on the first day of competition, competed in the 200m invitational and the 4x400m relays. The senior ran a season-best 24.43 in the 200m for a fifth-place finish. In the relays, teamed with Chelsea Brown, Gabrielle Jackson and Spencer, she helped guide the quartet to a seventh-place showing.
Rounding out the top-10 finishes were Weston Banks and Josh Greenwald in the shot put. Banks tallied a season-best in the event for a third-place finish, with a mark of 17.85m/58-6.75. The mark ranks No. 21 nationally. Greenwald was ninth after a toss of 16.13m/52-11.
The Cardinals return to action on Friday, Feb. 11, at the prestigious Tyson Invitational, hosted by the University of Arkansas, in Fayetteville, Ark. The two-day event will be held at the Randal Tyson Track Center.
