LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville football head coach Charlie Strong met with the media at the weekly football press conference on Monday, Nov. 28, to discuss the team's victory over USF, 34-24, and reflect upon a successful regular season.
Under Strong's guidance, the Cardinals are bowl eligible for the second-straight year and clinched a share of the BIG EAST title with the win over USF. At the beginning of the season, Louisville was picked to finish seventh in the league's preseason poll by the voting media representatives from each of the eight BIG EAST football markets.
The Cardinals, 7-5 overall and 5-2 in the league, are one of the youngest teams in NCAA Division I football, ranking 119th out of 120 teams in experience according to Phil Steele's preseason magazine. Louisville has just 17 seniors, with 11 true freshmen making starts this year. A total of 26 players made their collegiate debut throughout the course of the season.
One of those true freshman, quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, was named the Rivals.com National Freshman of the Week for the second time following a stellar performance against USF in which he completed 19 of 28 passes for 241 yards and three touchdowns. It was the third time this season he has thrown two or more touchdown passes in a game and first time throwing three. Also, Bridgewater, who has 1,855 passing yards this season, broke Chris Redman's freshman passing yardage record of 1,773 set in 1996.
The Cardinals are idle this week and will be awaiting the outcome of the Connecticut-Cincinnati game on Saturday, Dec. 3, at Nippert Stadium. A Cincinnati loss would mean Louisville can capture the BIG EAST's berth in a Bowl Championship Series game.
